They are mainly used to facilitate the installation of bearings that come with a bore. Some of such bearings include Taper Roller Bearings, Self-Aligning Ball Bearings, Spherical Roller Bearings, and Cylindrical Roller Bearings.
Parts of an adapter sleeve
Lock nuts
The aid mounting and dismounting of bearings hence reduces the amount of force being applied in order to avoid damage of shafts and bearings.
Lock washer
They are mainly fixed with the purpose of preventing fixed nuts from rotating when in motion.
Withdrawal sleeves
Withdrawal sleeves facilitate the location of bearings with bore being mounted on cylindrical shafts. Withdrawal sleeves after being mounted can be easily removed no matter how tight they have been fixed. Once the locknut is applied, it will loosen.
Hydraulic unit
They function more or less like oil paths in adapter sleeves making mounting to shaft assemble much comfortable especially when having to fix larger sleeves. They also have lock nuts attached to them.
The difference between an adapter sleeve and a withdrawal sleeve is that, an adapter sleeve is located at any position on a shaft together with the washer and locknut whilst a withdrawal sleeve is located on a shaft with support by a nut or end plate and mainly used for easy removal of bearings
