The next Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament is scheduled to be held from January 13 to February 11, 2024. The host country for this event will be Ivory Coast, and it will be the second time the nation has hosted the tournament since 1984.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) later announced a 40% increase in the prize money for the winner of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament. The winners of the tournament will now receive $7 million, which is $2 million more than the reward doled out at the last edition.
This significant increase in prize money demonstrates CAF’s commitment to rewarding merit, performance, and enhancing the status of the competition. Ghana a powerhouse in African football, having won the Afcon on 4 occasions have gone in hiatus for over 4 decades of wining the Afcon trophy are still on the hunt.
Ghana is no longer favorites when it comes to Afcon tournaments these days after a very poor showing in the last edition where they were beaten by Comoros and couldn’t even make it past the group stages, the worse in the country’s appearances in the tournament. With this new price money on board, is this going to be an extra motivation for the Black Stars of Ghana to emerge as winners of the tournament?
