In Assin Fosu, Ghana, the Magistrate Court has convicted two individuals for their involvement in an illegal abortion case. Charlotte Asiedu a 40 year old hairdresser, administered a concoction for the 17year old girl with the intention of inducing an illegal abortion.
Madam Charlotte Asiedu later arrested and charged with the offense of committing illegal abortion. She was convicted and fined Gh¢4,800.
Tetteh the victim’s boyfriend was also arrested and charged with abetment of crime. He advised the girl to notify her mother about her pregnancy, but she refused out of fear. Instead, the girl demanded money from Tetteh to buy drugs at a pharmacy, but the pharmacist refused to sell them due to the advanced stage of her pregnancy.
He later discussed his ordeal with a friend who recommended Charlotte Asiedu, leading to the illegal abortion attempt. He was also convicted and fined Gh¢4,800.
The victim, a Senior High School form three student, noticed she was 17 weeks pregnant while in school. After taking the concoction, she experienced severe stomach pains and was rushed to the St. Francis Xavier Hospital in Assin Fosu, where an examination revealed that the fetus had died.
