MOBILE BANKER FACES JUSTICE FOR EMBEZZLEMENT OF CUSTOMERS MONEY

Grace Addy, a 29-year-old mobile banker, has been sentenced to six years imprisonment by the Adentan Circuit Court in Ghana. She was found guilty of embezzling GH¢162,700 belonging to customers of an undisclosed Rural Bank. Grace was charged with forgery of documents and two counts of stealing.
She pleaded guilty to the charges.

The mobile banker collected money directly from the bank’s customers at their homes and workplaces.
An audit conducted on her activities revealed that she had stolen GH¢142,700 from the bank’s customers.

Instead of depositing the collected money with the bank, she transferred it to other mobile money accounts for her personal use. She also forged receipts of payment to a customer, altering the amount from GH¢20,000 to GH¢40,000 to create a false impression of payment.

Grace was sentenced to two(2) years imprisonment for forgery of documents.
Three(3) years imprisonment for stealing GH¢20,000 belonging to a customer and six(6) years imprisonment for stealing GH¢142,700. The sentences will run concurrently.
Grace voluntarily admitted to stealing a total of GH¢162,700. She claimed to have given the money to someone to facilitate her travel abroad.
