VIRTUALLY IMPAIRED MAN GRADUATES FROM UCC

Dr Ben Bishop Nyanihorba Ayamba is a remarkable Ghanaian who overcame his visual impairment to achieve academic excellence. He is the first visually impaired person to ever attain a PhD from the University of Cape Coast (UCC) in Ghana. He graduated with a doctorate degree in Guidance and Counselling on Friday, January 26, 2024. He also received the Special Chancellor’s Award of US $2,000 for his feat.

Dr Ayamba was born sighted, but lost his vision in a car accident in 1995. He did not give up on his education, and pursued various courses in braille at different institutions, including the Presbyterian Training College of Education, the UCC, and the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA). He has three master’s degrees and one bachelor’s degree in addition to his PhD.

He is currently a lecturer at the Mampong Technical College of Education and the UCC College of Distance Education (CoDE). Dr Ayamba attributed his success to God, his determination, and the supportive environment at UCC. He advised parents of children with disabilities to seek guidance and support to enroll them in appropriate institutions, and encouraged persons with disabilities to pursue their interests and contribute to society.

ACTOR AND POLITICIAN JOHN DUMELO GRADUATES FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF GHANA

John Dumelo is a Ghanaian actor and politician who recently graduated from the University of Ghana with a Master’s Degree in Law, focusing on Natural Resources. He announced his latest academic achievement on social media on Friday, January 26, 2024.

This is his third master’s degree, after obtaining his second one from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) in 2022. He is also the parliamentary candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency for the 2024 elections.

John Dumelo is known for his roles in movies such as Baby Thief, Heart of Men, 4 Play, The Game, Northern Affair, Chelsea, Adam’s Apple and others. He is one of the most popular and influential actors in Ghana.

NATO CHIEF URGES US TO CONTINUE SUPPORT FOR UKRAINE

NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg, who is the secretary general of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, a military alliance of 30 European and North American countries. He visited Washington DC in January 28, 2024 to meet with top US defense officials and lawmakers, and urged them to continue supporting Ukraine with weapons, ammunition and spares in its war against Russia.

Jen Stoltenberg argued that US military funding for Ukraine carries a key deterrent message for China, which is closely watching the allies’ response to Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. He said that if Putin gets what he wants in Ukraine, it will embolden other authoritarian powers, such as Iran or North Korea, and make the world more vulnerable.

He also called for a more ambitious new defense investment pledge from NATO members, with 2% of GDP as a minimum to be invested in their defense. He said this was necessary to reverse Russia’s aggression and to maintain NATO’s credibility and cohesion.

THE UK GOVERNMENT LOOKS TO BAN DISPOSABLE VAPES DUE TO CHILDREN’S HEALTH

The UK government plans to ban disposable vapes as part of its efforts to protect children’s health and reduce youth vaping. Disposable vapes are said to be a key driver behind the alarming rise in youth vaping, with the proportion of 11 to 17-year-old vapers using disposables increasing almost nine fold in the last two years.

The government also intends to introduce new powers to restrict vape flavours, introduce plain packaging, and change how vapes are displayed in shops so they don’t appeal to children. The ban is expected to be introduced across the UK, and retailers will be given six months to implement it.

The government also reiterated its commitment to create a smoke-free generation by making it illegal to sell tobacco products to anyone born on or after January 1, 2009. The Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is expected to announce the details of the plan on Monday on a visit to a school.

DAD DIES AFTER SAVING SON FROM DROWNING IN ICY POND

Kevin Howell, who is 51 year old, works as a town manager for the town of Carmel, Maine. He and his son, Sawyer, 4, were walking on Etna Pond on Friday, January 28, 2024, around 6:30 a.m., when they fell through the ice.

Howell who managed to lift his son onto the ice and told him to run home and get his mother, Katie. Katie called 911 and rushed to help her husband with an anchor and rope, but she also fell into the water. A sheriff detective in Penobscot County, Jordan Norton, arrived at the scene and rescued Katie, but could not find Howell.

Divers from the state police and the warden service searched the pond and recovered Howell’s body around 2 p.m.
Howell was remembered as a “wonderful guy” who “really believed in community” and improved the town with various projects. He and his wife moved to Carmel in 2014 and had their son in 2019. Howell’s son survived the incident and is expected to recover.

RECORD CHAMPIONS OF AFCON EGYPT KNOCKED OUT BY DR. CONGO

The last 16 clash between Egypt and Congo took place on Sunday January 28, 2024 in San-Pedro, Ivory Coast. The match ended in a 1-1 draw after extra time, with Meschack Elia scoring for DR Congo and Mostafa Mohamed equalizing for Egypt from a penalty.

DR Congo won the penalty shootout 8-7, with their goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi scoring the winning spot-kick after Egypt’s goalkeeper Mohamed Abou Gabal hit the bar. Egypt played without their star player Mohamed Salah, who was injured in a group match against Ghana and returned to his club Liverpool.

Egypt, who are the record seven-time champions of the tournament, were knocked out of the competition and failed to win any of their matches.
DR Congo advanced to the quarter-finals, where they will face Guinea, who beat Equatorial Guinea 1-0 earlier on Sunday.

SUNDAY MORNING MASS MASSACRE IN INSTANBUL

On Sunday, January 28, 2024, around 11:40 local time (08:40 GMT), two masked gunmen attacked a Roman Catholic church in Istanbul, Turkey, during the morning mass. The church was the Santa Maria Church in the Sariyer district, a 19th Century building that serves a small Catholic community.

The gunmen opened fire at the worshippers, killing one person and injuring several others with the victim identified as CT, a disabled man who was among those attending the service.

The assailants fled the scene after the shooting. The motive for the attack was not immediately clear, but Turkish officials condemned it as a “vile attack” and expressed their solidarity with the Catholic community.
The Pope also offered his support and closeness to the church after the attack.

ICON OF THE SEAS SAILS FROM MIAMI

The world’s largest cruise ship is the Icon of the Seas, owned by Royal Caribbean Group. It weighs about 250,800 tonnes with a length of nearly 365 meters (1,198 ft). That’s about five times larger than the Titanic and sailed from Miami Florida on it’s maiden voyage on the Saturday January 27, 2024.

It’s 365m-long (1,197 ft) length allows it to have 20 decks. It can house a maximum of 7,600 passengers and 2,350 crew members. It cost $2bn (£1.6bn) to build and has more than 40 restaurants, bars and lounges.It also has seven swimming pools, six water slides, an ice skating rink, a theater, and a funfair on the top deck.

The vessel is powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), which burns more cleanly than traditional marine fuels, but also leaks harmful methane into the air.
The Icon of the Seas is a remarkable feat of engineering and design, but also raises environmental concerns.

PROTESTORS THROW SOUP AT MONA LISA PAINTING

Two environmental activists from a group called Riposte Alimentaire threw pumpkin soup at the Mona Lisa painting in the Louvre Museum in Paris. The painting, which is one of the world’s most famous artworks by Leonardo da Vinci, is protected by bulletproof glass and was not damaged.

The protesters claimed that they were demanding the right to “healthy and sustainable food” and social security. They were arrested by the police shortly after the incident. This is not the first time that the Mona Lisa has been targeted by activists. In 2022, another protester threw cake at the painting.

3 AMERICAN TROOPS KILLED WITH SEVERAL INJURED IN ATTACK ON JORDAN BASE

This tragic incident occured on Sunday, January 28, 2024. Three US troops were killed and at least 34 were wounded in a drone attack by an Iran-backed militia on a US base in northeast Jordan, near the border with Syria. The base, known as Tower 22, is part of an advise-and-assist mission with Jordan.

President Joe Biden condemned the attack as “despicable and wholly unjust” and vowed to hold the perpetrators accountable. This is the first time US troops have been killed by enemy fire in the Middle East since the beginning of the Gaza war in October 2023. The drone attack is a significant escalation of the tensions in the region, where US and coalition forces have faced more than 158 attacks from Iranian-backed militants since October 17, 2023.
