RECORD CHAMPIONS OF AFCON EGYPT KNOCKED OUT BY DR. CONGO

The last 16 clash between Egypt and Congo took place on Sunday January 28, 2024 in San-Pedro, Ivory Coast. The match ended in a 1-1 draw after extra time, with Meschack Elia scoring for DR Congo and Mostafa Mohamed equalizing for Egypt from a penalty.

DR Congo won the penalty shootout 8-7, with their goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi scoring the winning spot-kick after Egypt’s goalkeeper Mohamed Abou Gabal hit the bar. Egypt played without their star player Mohamed Salah, who was injured in a group match against Ghana and returned to his club Liverpool.

Egypt, who are the record seven-time champions of the tournament, were knocked out of the competition and failed to win any of their matches.
DR Congo advanced to the quarter-finals, where they will face Guinea, who beat Equatorial Guinea 1-0 earlier on Sunday.
