Kevin Howell, who is 51 year old, works as a town manager for the town of Carmel, Maine. He and his son, Sawyer, 4, were walking on Etna Pond on Friday, January 28, 2024, around 6:30 a.m., when they fell through the ice.
Howell who managed to lift his son onto the ice and told him to run home and get his mother, Katie. Katie called 911 and rushed to help her husband with an anchor and rope, but she also fell into the water. A sheriff detective in Penobscot County, Jordan Norton, arrived at the scene and rescued Katie, but could not find Howell.
Divers from the state police and the warden service searched the pond and recovered Howell’s body around 2 p.m.
Howell was remembered as a “wonderful guy” who “really believed in community” and improved the town with various projects. He and his wife moved to Carmel in 2014 and had their son in 2019. Howell’s son survived the incident and is expected to recover.
