DEADLY ATTACKS IN IRAN AS ISIS CLAIM RESPONSIBILITY

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) a Sunni jihadist group with a particularly violent ideology is claiming responsibility for the bombing attacks that tragically resulted in the deaths of 84 people.

The attacks targeted a procession honouring Iranian General Qassem Soleimani. Qassem Soleimani was a prominent Iranian military officer who served in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). He was born on March 11, 1957, and served Iran from 1979 until his assassination on January 3, 2020. Soleimani was the commander of the Quds Force, a division of the IRGC responsible for extraterritorial and clandestine military operations.

He played a significant role in military operations across the Middle East. His influence extended beyond Iran’s borders, with involvement in the Iran–Iraq War, the Syrian Civil War, and the fight against ISIS, among other conflicts. He was assassinated by a U.S. drone strike near Baghdad International Airport, which marked a significant escalation in tensions between the United States and Iran.

It was the deadliest attack in the country since a 1978 arson incident. Iran observed a day of mourning following the blasts. ISIS claimed to have orchestrated the double suicide bomber attack at the memorial for the deceased Iranian military official. This event has caused significant grief and outrage, and it marks a severe act of violence in the region.

HORROR IN IOWA AS TEEN OPENS FIRE IN A HIGH SCHOOL

School shooting are a tragic part of history and Iowa has received its share of such events with one happening on Thursday morning at Perry High School Iowa (a suburb northwest of Des Moines) as Police and officials responded to report of gunfire at the school premises at 7:37am.

The incident happened on the first school day after winter break and as Police arrived at the crime scene found multiple gunshot victims with one reportedly dead and five (5) others wounded.

They were rushed to the hospital with one in a critical but not life-threatening condition. Four (4) of the victims are students of the school and one is the school administrator. The suspect has been identified as Dylan Butler, 17, who was a student at the school and was found with firearms and makeshift explosive device.

Butler was found in a self-inflicted gunshot wound and had a pump action shotgun and a small caliber handgun on him, and he made social media posts around the time of the shooting. Investigations are school on going and our prayers are with the victims and their family.

JEFFERY EPSTEIN AND SOME NAMES THAT APPEARED IN HIS DOCUMENT

Jeffrey Epstein was an American financier and convicted sex offender. He was known for his wealth and connections to influential individuals. Epstein faced allegations of sex trafficking minors and was arrested on federal charges in July 2019.

He died in his jail cell in August 2019, and the medical examiner ruled his death a suicide by hanging. His case has been highly publicized due to the involvement of high-profile figures and the controversial nature of his plea deal in 2008.

Many of the celebrities namely Leonardo DiCaprio, Bruce Willis, Michael Jackson, Noami Campbell and more that appeared in the document were not accused of any wrong doings. Epstein had many high-profile connections, including former U.S. Presidents, foreign prime ministers and Britain’s Prince Andrew, as well as Hollywood stars and, people in the modelling and fashion industries.

Most of the names mentioned above were obtained in the court documents and were mentioned by Guiffre and Johanna Sjoberg who were both allegedly Epstein’s victims.

 

JULIUS KUUNUOR ADDRESSES GHANAIANS ON PREVIOUS FIRE CASES

According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), a total of 5,256 fire outbreaks were recorded nationwide from January to November 2023. This represents a 4.92 per cent decrease as compared to the recorded 5,530 fire outbreaks in the same period in 2022.

The Service also attended to 532 Road Traffic Accidents with a total of 2,557 injuries and 263 deaths recorded. The Service performed Fire Safety Audits and Inspections in 14,157 public and residential premises.

The Service also recorded 656,591 prank calls (false alarms) in the year with some even calling to say

“my wife’s private part is on fire come and quench it”

Chief Fire Officer (CFO) Julius Kuunuor said the decline in 2023 as compared to 2022 is due to the intensified public safety education initiative conducted nationwide by the service. CFO Julius Kuunuor emphasized that the safety of human lives and properties is a collective effort, so he’ll urge all stakeholders to ensure the safety of lives properties by adhering to the safety measures taught by the service.

 

BE FAIR AND FIRM DURING ELECTION 2024: CLERGY TO EC

The clergy in Ghana have urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to display the polling station results on a public portal during voting to enhance transparency and credibility in the 2024 general election.

They have also called on the EC, the political parties, and the civil society organisations to work together to ensure a peaceful and fair election. The clergy have also appealed to the biggest opposition party in Ghana National Democratic Congress (NDC) to return to the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) to foster consensus building.

In the advice to the various stakeholders in the upcoming election, they appealed and cautioned the youth not to allow themselves to be influenced by politicians who might approach and use them as tools to foment trouble in the campaigning period.

 

24 PLAYERS ARRIVE AT THE BLACK STAR CAMP IN KUMASI

The Black Stars have opened a nine-day camping in Kumasi on Monday, January 2, 2024 ahead of the AFCON 2023 to be staged in Cote D’Ivoire.

Twenty-four players arrived and trained on the first day of the camp at the Dr Kwame Kyei Sports Complex.

The team was initially scheduled to camp in South Africa and play a friendly match against Botswana, but the plans were changed due to public backlash and financial implications. The Black Stars is now camping in Kumasi and have friendly encounter on January 8, 2024 against Namibia in preparation towards the Afcon which commences on Saturday, Jan 13, 2024 and ends on Feb 11, 2024. The team’s training sessions in Kumasi will be behind closed doors, with no access granted to the public and media, except for a dedicated session with the media.

Among the 24 players who actively participated in Tuesday’s training were notable figures such as Joseph Wollacott, Lawrence Ati-Zigi, Alidu Seidu, Denis Odoi, Kingsley Schindler, Gideon Mensah, Abdul Fatawu Hamid, Nicholas Opoku, and Daniel Amartey, Salisu Mohammed, Alexander Djiku, Baba Iddrisu, Elisha Owusu, Abdul Samed Salis, Richmond Lamptey, Majeed Ashimeru, Andre Ayew, Ransford Yeboah Koningsdorffer, Osman Bukari, Joseph Painstil, Ernest Nuamah, Antoine Semenyo, and Jonathan Sowah.

 

FAMOUS WAAKYE SELLER AUNTIE MUNI PASSES ON

Waakye traditional Ghanaian dish made of rice and beans, often served with meat, fish, eggs, and spicy sauce is one of the most enjoyable food for Ghanaians and Auntie Muni was one woman known to be one of the best if not the best seller of traditional foods.

Aunti Muni was a popular waakye seller who operated a roadside joint at Labone Junction in Accra. Her waakye was widely regarded as one of the best in the country, attracting customers from all walks of life, including celebrities, politicians, and tourists.

She was known for her friendly service, generous portions, and quality ingredients. She passed away on January 3, 2024 at the age of 72 after a brief illness. Her death is mourned by many Ghanaians who expressed their condolences and appreciation for her contribution to Ghanaian cuisine and culture.

ACCRA-TEMA MOTORWAY TO GET MASSIVE FACELIFT

The project expected to be completed within 36 months started on Tuesday, January 2, 2024.

The project involves the rehabilitation and expansion of a 19.5-kilometre stretch of the motorway from the Tetteh Quarshie roundabout to the Tema roundabout into a 10-lane span. It also includes the rehabilitation of the existing six-lane dividing Nsawam highway and the George Walker Bush highway.

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Attah announced that the project is funded by a loan agreement of $338 million from the African Development Bank and is being supervised by Maripoma Enterprise Limited and Ghana Infrastructure Fund.

The project aims to improve the traffic flow, road safety, and economic activities along the corridor as the motorway continues to from various problems such as potholes, lack of adequate lighting, hawking, and criminal activities.

The rehabilitation and expansion project are expected to address these issues and improve the road conditions. The project reserves 40% of all works for local contractors.

 

JAPAN IN THE NEWS AGAIN AS FIRE ENGULFS PLANE AFTER COLLITION

There have been a few incidents of Japanese airlines that caught fire in the past. The most recent one happened on January 2, 2024, when a Japan Airlines jet collided with another aircraft (Japanese Coast Guard Plane) on the runway at Haneda airport in Tokyo and burst into flames.

Japan Airlines said all 367 passengers and 12 crew members had safely evacuated the jet. Unfortunately, 5 members on the Japanese Coast Guard plane that collided with it were killed, these coast guards were headed to western Japan to help with the earthquake that occurred days back.

Flight attendants through skill and luck, miraculously helped all 367 passengers out of the engulfed airline. The plane was a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which had previously suffered from electrical problems and battery fires in 2013.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation.

LIBERAL CRITICS BASH DAVE CHAPPELLE OVER HIS TRANS JOKE

Dave Chappelle is a famous American comedian who has been criticized for making jokes about transgender people in his Netflix specials.

He was attacked by some media critics for his continues jokes about transgender people by comparing them to black people who pretend to be white, such as Rachel Dolezal.

He also said that he is “team Terf”, meaning that he supports J.K. Rowling’s views on gender identity. He Mocked a transgender woman who was his friend and defended him from backlash, but later committed suicide. Many transgender people and allies have found his jokes offensive, transphobic, and harmful, and have called for Netflix to remove his specials or boycott the platform.

Some transgender comedians have also responded to Chappelle, saying that his jokes are unfunny, outdated, and repetitive. Chappelle has defended his jokes, saying that he is not hateful, but just trying to be funny and honest.

He has also challenged his critics to meet him and have a dialogue.
