KOSTA PAPIC LANDS A NEW JOB IN SOUTH AFRICA

0

Kosta Papic has landed a new job in South Africa a few days after he shockingly left his role as Hearts of Oak head coach.

The Serbian has been appointed as technical manager of South African top-flight side FC Black Leopards.

He was unveiled by Leopards on Thursday afternoon, three days after Hearts of Oak accepted his resignation.

Papic resigned after barely three months at the helm of affairs, citing, among others, interference from the club’s management as a frustrating reason behind his decision.

Those claims have been denied by board members Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe and Vincent Sowah Odotei.

The recent spell is Papic’s second time coaching Hearts. Between 2008 and 2009, the 60-year-old first managed the club, helping win their last Ghana Premier League title. Since then, the Phobians have not won any major trophy.

Hearts are currently 11th on the league table with 17 points, five off top spot.

ELECTION PETITION: SC THROWS OUT MAHAMA’S REVIEW APPLICATION

0

A nine-member panel of Supreme Court Judges has unanimously affirmed a seven-member panel decision that the Electoral Commission cannot be compelled to call its Chairperson Jean Mensa to testify in the election petition.

The earlier panel comprising; Chief Justice Kwasi Anin Yeboah, Justices Appau, Marful-Sau, Nene Amegatcher, Mariana Owusu, and Gertrude Torkonoo ruled that the EC boss filing a witness statement does not mean she has to testify.

The court also said the depositions in affidavits with regards to the interrogatories do not mean the witness can be compelled.

The Chief Justice who read the decision explained that no provision in the constitution or statute has been pointed out to show that the EC Chairperson can be subjected to different rules contrary to established rules of procedure and settled practice.

Mr. John Mahama’s lawyers filed for a review of this decision saying the Apex Court committed errors of law in arriving at this conclusion.

The review had Justices Tanko and Lovelace Johnson joining the original 7 member panel to hear the case.

Lead Counsel for the petitioner, Tsatsu Tsikata insisted that the 9 member panel ought to rule that Jean Mensa by filing a witness statement and making claims of petitioner’s option of cross examining her in an affidavit should be compelled to testify.

This was opposed by lawyers for President Akufo-Addo and the EC.

They relied on rule 54 of the Supreme Court rules (C.I 16) to insists that the conditions meriting a review have not been met.

These conditions are exceptional circumstances that have resulted in a miscarriage of justice and discovery of new and important matter or evidence which, after the exercise of due diligence, was not within the applicant’s knowledge or could not be produced by him.

The 9-member panel ruled that these conditions have not been met.

0

Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya and Minister-designate for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mavis Hawa Koomson has regretted firing shots at a polling station in Kasoa in the Central Region during the 2020 voter registration exercise.

A remorseful Hawa Koomson at her vetting today, Thursday, February 18, 2021, in Parliament apologized for her actions saying she is sorry to all those whose lives were endangered as a result of the unfortunate incident.

“The shooting incident which occurred during the voter registration exercise was unfortunate. I apologize to the people who were scared on that day,” she told the Appointment Committee.

Hawa Koomson fired the warning shots at the Step to Christ centre during the ongoing mass voter registration exercise on Monday, July 20, 2020.

She admitted afterwards to firing the gunshot at the voter registration centre. The MP, however, said the act was in self-defence but wished it never occurred.

“I pray it never happens again in our politics. It was in self-defence because I felt my time was in danger,” the former Special Development Initiative Minister maintained.

Following the incident, several civil society organizations, religious groups, and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) demanded her immediate arrest and prosecution over the unfortunate incident.

The matter is currently being probed by the Ghana Police Service.

BOG CAUTIONS THE PUBLIC AGAINST MONEY DOUBLING SCHEMES

0

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has once again cautioned the general public against the practice of engaging in money doubling, card loading, and credit card loading schemes.

According to the bank, the practice often involves inviting the general public through the social, traditional mediums asking them to deposit funds through the various payment systems for attractive returns and opportunities.

But reiterating the call in a statement it first issued in October 2020 and republished on Wednesday February 17 2021, the Bank of Ghana said it has not issued a license to any entity or individuals to engage in the act as required by the Banks and Specialised Deposit-Taking Institutions Act, 2016 (Act 930), as their activities amount to deposit-taking.

“The said individuals and entities in question commit an offence and will be required to return all received. In addition, such individuals and entities will be liable upon summary conviction to punishment such as imprisonment between two and four years,” the Bank of Ghana said.

The Bank of Ghana however charged the public to verify with the Bank, licensed financial institutions or entities before making deposits with them.

It also urged media outlets to desist from advertising “Money Doubling,” “Card Loading” and “Credit Card Loading Systems” on their platforms.

TOGBE AFEDE FINGURED IN THE PROBLEMS OF ACCRA HEARTS OF OAK

Saban Quaye, the team manager of Accra Hearts of Oak has mentioned the club’s Executive Chairman, Togbe Afede as one of the figures whose activities forced coach Kosta Papic to resign.

As confirmed by the club on Tuesday, Papic has left the club as a result of ‘personal reasons’.

Papic’s reason for quitting which he disclosed in an interview with Angel FM is that some board members were interfering in his works.

Also on his way out is the veteran Saban Quaye who as per report has been fired by the club.

In quotes attributed to him by 442GH, Saban Quaye cited Togbe Afede as being of three board members who exercised undue influence in Papic’s work.

According to him, Papic could no longer stomach the behaviour of the board members hence his decision to resign.

“Please add to the story that, I also mentioned the name of Togbe as one of the people influencing the coach’s work, I didn’t only mention Vincent Sowah Odotei, and Alhaji Akambi alone, I also told the board that the coach informed me that the pressure from board chairman was too much,” he said in an interview.

Saban Quaye also disclosed that he has not officially been informed of his sacking and that it will be an error on his part to resign.

‘Where is the letter sacking me? I have not received any letter, I am waiting for them, I made some mistakes in my earlier resignation from the club, and do not want to repeat that, if they think I deserve to be sacked, so be it”, he said.

KOKU ANYIDOHO CALLS A BLUFF OF THE NDC

0

Former Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, has called the bluff of the party following its decision to suspend him indefinitely.

The NDC, in a letter signed by the General Secretary of the party, Johnson Asiedu Nketia addressed to Mr Anyidoho, dated February 8, 2021, disclosed that the decision to suspend the latter was reached based on two separate petitions to the party by two registered members of the party.

“At the end of its deliberations, the following decisions were taken in accordance with articles 46 (I), 46(6), and 46 (8)(b) of the Party’s Constitution.

“That with immediate effect your membership of the NDC be suspended. That the petitions be referred to the party’s disciplinary committee for further action.

“You are, therefore, by this letter to take note, and notice is hereby given, that your membership of the NDC is suspended pending the hearing and final determination of the petition against your conduct,” the letter read.

But speaking in an interview with Okay FM on Monday, Mr Anyidoho, who claimed he’s not received official communication over his suspension, stressed that he cannot be pushed out of the NDC.

“Let me state unequivocally, nobody, nobody can kick me out of the NDC, let anybody dare push me out of the NDC and we’ll see what will happen. Anybody who’s attempting is bluffing…they are just bluffing. I’ve not received any letter I say they are bluffing.

“All I’m saying is that I will not destroy the NDC, in the same way, we’ll work hard to ensure that the legacy of late Presidents Mills and Rawlings and all the cadres who have suffered will not be in vain. NDC shall not die, NPP will not die, CPP will not die, the democracy of Ghana will not die and Ghana will not die. Me Koku Anyidoho, where I am now, my sole duty is to ensure that the Republic of Ghana does not die, that’s all,” the former Director of Communications at the Presidency during the Atta Mills administration stated.

NANA ADDO CREATED 3 MILLION JOBS – LABOR MINISTER

0

The Akufo-Addo administration created about three million jobs in its first term, according to the Employment and Labour Relations Minister-nominee, Ignatius Baffour Awuah.

“The last time we reported was in September 2020 and the figure was around three million jobs,” the nominee said during his vetting on Wednesday, February 17, 2021.

When probed on specifics, Mr. Awuah said he would make the relevant figures available to the committee.

“I have on a number of occasions come to this house and given these figures out already,” he also said.

Concerns were also raised by the committee on discrepancies between the figures he gave and what was contained in his handing over notes.

The handing over notes indicated that 2.7 million jobs were created with 2.3 million jobs being under the Planting for Food and Jobs programme and 350,000 jobs in the public sector being highlighted.

But Mr. Awuah explained that the handing over notes were prepared in June in line with the Transitional Provisions Act.

“I cannot come before this committee and lie to the committee. I have indicated my readiness to supply you with the information by close of day.”

“If I was given the chance to update handing over notes, this would not be the figure you would have,” he added.

On how the ministry arrives at its figures, Mr. Awuah said his outfit collates data from various sectors under the state to record employment figures under the public sector.

But for the private sector, Mr. Awuah said his ministry relies mainly on data on pension contributions from the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).

“Every person engaged to work must be entitled to SSNIT payments… at any point in time, if you want such information, you can go to SSNIT,” he explained.

Mr. Awuah further admitted to gaps in this strategy because of the high number of Ghanaians not making pension contributions though he insisted that “it is very close to accurate.”

“That [SSNIT] is the best we have at the moment. The level of informality in the country is very high. About 80 percent of work takes place within the informal space.”

PRINCE PHILIP HOSPITALIZED

0

Prince Philip, the 99-year-old husband of Queen Elizabeth, has been taken to a London hospital after feeling unwell, according to a Buckingham Palace press release.

“His Royal Highness, The Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to the King Edward VII Hospital in London, on Tuesday evening,” the Wednesday release stated.

A Royal source told CNN that the Duke traveled to the hospital by car and it was not an emergency admission. The source added that he walked into the hospital unaided and his illness is not Covid-19 related.

The Queen remains at Windsor Castle, to the west of London, the source said.

The Buckingham Palace press release added: “The Duke’s admission is a precautionary measure, on the advice of His Royal Highness’s Doctor, after feeling unwell.

“The Duke is expected to remain in hospital for a few days of observation and rest,” it added.

Prince Philip stepped back from public life in 2017. Due to his advancing age, the Duke has been taken to hospital several times in recent years. In December 2019 he was admitted to the hospital for treatment of a pre-existing condition.

The Queen and Prince Philip have spent most of the past year at Windsor Castle, having moved away from Buckingham Palace during the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in spring 2020.

The couple both received the first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine in January 2021.

AFARI GYAN WAS FORCED INTO THE BOX BY BAWUMIAH’S BRILLIANCE – KONKRUMAH

0

A spokesperson for the lawyers of the second respondent in the ongoing 2020 Election Petition hearing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has stated that there is a major difference between how former EC Boss Dr Kwadjo Afari Gyan appeared in the witness box in 2013 and what the 2020 Petitioners are seeking to achieve in the ongoing hearing.

He was addressing journalists in Accra on Tuesday 16th February 2021 after the Supreme Court dismissed an application filed by former President Mahama to have his case re-open.

According to the apex court, they find no merit in the application and proceed with the ongoing case without any hesitation. The court’s decision has further worsened attempts by the Petitioners to have 1st respondent witness Jean Mensa to give evidence.

Mr Oppong Nkrumah stressed that there is a major difference between the 2013 election petition and the current one.

“The brilliance of the then running mate Alhaji Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia in demonstrating 11,000 pink sheets and the problems with it compelled Dr. Afari Gyan that if he did not get into the witness box, the job that he had done was going to be set aside,” he said.

The hearing has been adjourned to Wednesday, February 17.

GHS SENDS ALERT TO HEALTH CHIEFS ON EBOLA OUTBREAK

0

The Ghana Health Service has asked all regional, district and local health institutions to be on high alert as the deadly Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) has been recorded in West African country, Guinea.

Guinea confirmed seven cases of the deadly virus on February 14, 2021, leading to the death of three persons.

“EVD is a severe, often fatal illness in humans caused by the Ebola virus. The virus is transmitted to people from wild animals and spreads in the human population through human-to-human transmission. It can be transmitted through contact with body fluids of a person infected with the virus,” a letter the GHS forwarded to its regional health directorates noted.

GHS further directed all regions, districts and health facilities to initiate preparedness and response plans of EVD.

“All Regional and District Public Health Emergency Management Committees should include EVD on their agenda. Additionally, regions, districts, health facilities, port health units at all border posts particularly along the Western border and all landing beaches are to heighten surveillance for EVD using the standard case definition. They are also requested to remind all Ghanaians and residents in Ghana on the need to protect themselves from the disease,” the letter sighted by citinewsroom.com added.

How to prevent Ebola according to the GHS:

Avoid contact with blood and body fluids of people who show any of the Ebola symptoms
Practice hand hygiene: frequent handwashing with soap and under running water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser
Do not handle items that may have come in contact with an infected person’s blood or body fluids
Avoid contact with dead bodies, including participating in funeral or burial rituals of suspected or confirmed Ebola cases
Avoid contact with animals or with raw or undercooked meat
Do not handle bushmeat
Seek medical care immediately if one develops a fever (body temperature 38°C or above) or other symptoms such as severe headache, fatigue, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, or unexplained bleeding or bruising
During the West Africa Ebola outbreak in 2014-2016, there were 28 000 cases, including 11,000 deaths.

The outbreak started in Guinea and then moved across land borders to Sierra Leone and Liberia.
