University of Ghana scientists obtain “critical information” to track virus

0

Scientists at the University of Ghana have obtained critical data about the genetic composition of the COVID-19 strains in Ghana.

The data was obtained from viral strains in 15 of the confirmed cases in the country and would help scientists gain a comprehensive understanding of the variations of the virus that are present in the country.

A statement issued by the University’s Public Affairs Directorate on Saturday said the feat was attained by scientists at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR – College of Health Sciences) and the West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens (WACCBIP – College of Basic and Applied Sciences) at the University.

It said the success achieved was a significant milestone in Ghana’s response to the pandemic, as it would strengthen surveillance.

According to the statement the scientists have successfully sequenced genomes of SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for the global COVID-19 pandemic.

It explained that Genome sequencing allows for the compilation of the most comprehensive information about an organism‘s genetic makeup.

Using advanced next generation sequencing methods, scientists are able to track and compare viral mutations to understand the origins of imported strains and to discover if any novel strains are emerging locally.

The statement explained that samples analysed were taken from two travellers who arrived in Ghana from the UK, one from Norway, one from Hungary, one from India, and one traveller who arrived from the United States through the United Arab Emirates.

Nine samples were taken from individuals who had no travel history, who are believed to have acquired the infection locally.

According to the Director of the NMIMR, Prof Abraham Anang, the successful establishment of this sequencing capability at University of Ghana would strengthen surveillance for tracking mutations of the virus and aid in the tracing of the sources of community infections in people with no known contact with confirmed cases.

The Director of WACCBIP, Prof Gordon Awandare, explained further that the data obtained from the samples indicate that Ghana is dealing with the same pathogen, and that it has not yet changed its genetic make-up significantly.

“The data tells us that, while there were some differences between the strains from the various countries, all the 15 genomes generally resembled (with >92% similarity) the reference strain that was isolated in the Wuhan Province of China, where the outbreak began,” the statement attributed to him.

“It is natural that pathogens will evolve as they encounter different environmental challenges, so we will need to continue monitoring to keep track with these changes and determine how they impact on the efficacy of potential drugs or vaccines that are being developed,” he added.

The statement added that the information from the sequence data has been shared with scientists around the world through an open access platform known as the Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data (GISAID) database, where other sequences from various countries are stored (https://www.gisaid.org/).

“The University of Ghana is proud to note that this feat was achieved entirely by local scientists using established local capacity including our Next Generation Sequencing Core and ‘Zuputo‘, our High Performance Computing system, which are jointly managed by NMIMR and WACCBIP, with support from University of Ghana Computing Systems,” Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Ebenezer Oduro Owusu said.

Ghana Police Service to feed frontline police officers

0

The Ghana Police Service would now feed all frontline Police officers working to maintain law and order as the country fights coronavirus cases in the country. According to the Director of Police Public Affairs, Sheilla Abyie-Buckman, this directive would help officers often remain at post instead of moving around in search of food when needed.

“The IGP took the initial decision of giving the money to the police officers involved in the operation in cash so the money was given to commanders to disburse in cash. But from our monitoring in the earlier days, we found that Police Officers will leave their duty points to go in search for food and water to buy while their counterpart soldiers stayed at their duty point. The IGP also instructed commanders to arrange transportation of the men and women from the briefing point to their duty point and back to their briefing point.”

We haven’t positioned ourselves strong enough to do what China did and we’ll definitely need some support. We never had source for emergency response when the problem started but Government has done a lot to put in protective equipment especially for our health workers working in the frontline.” He said

Adding, “As we move ahead, it is becoming clearer that we may need, all of us, to begin to wear some of these things, so this gesture is not something we can underscore as Ghana makes efforts to add all”

He also mentioned that some five local companies in Ghana have been selected to soon begin the production of more PPE’s in the country for use by Ghanaian citizens.

“We are continuing to develop some of this equipment, for protection in-country and soon you’ll see government efforts also coming. The African continent was hit hard after the first confirmed coronavirus case was recorded in Egypt on 14th February 2020. Since then a number of cases have been recorded in 56 African countries.

Countless efforts have been made by country leaders to prevent the continuous spread of the disease which have led most countries in employing strict measures such as physical distancing, lockdown and practicing of personal hygiene to reduce the spread of the virus. However, even though these measures have been helpful, it is clear the cases keep increasing and the effects of the lockdown have also caused economic hardships among individuals and states at large.

This and a number of reasons have compelled some leaders on contemplating on lifting or reducing the lockdown measures for some specific businesses to operate in order to ease the financial loses in these countries.

The International Monetary Fund have also supported 24 out of these 56 African countries in need of financial support to manage the covid-19 crisis in their countries.

Recently, member states of ECOWAS have also been supported to acquire some medical supplies to help in the fight of the disease. A subsequent virtual meeting was also held to intensify the fight against the virus with the Nigerian President being the leader of the fight with the ECOWAS region.

President Buhari Grants Amnesty to 2,600 Prisoners over COVID-19 Pandemic

0

The Nigerian Government has granted amnesty to no fewer than 2,600 inmates across the country. Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, in a press conference on Thursday said the decision was taken as part of measures to decongest prison facilities in the country amid the Coronavirus pandemic.

He said, “In a symbolic gesture of the amnesty given to the 2,600 inmates across Nigeria, 41 Federal inmates and 29 FCT inmates making a total of 70 inmates who met the above criteria will be released today from the Kuje Custodial Center in Abuja.

“This amnesty will not apply to inmates sentenced for violent extreme offences such as terrorism, kidnapping, armed banditry, rape, human trafficking, and culpable homicide and so on.

“The governors of the 36 states under whose jurisdiction most of the inmates were incarcerated will complete the exercise in line with the federal principle.”

Recall that Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, had on Wednesday urged the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Ibrahim Muhammad, to prevail on judges in the country to “hear urgent applications via Skype or Zoom during the lockdown”.

Following the outbreak of Coronavirus in Nigeria, courts were directed to shut down until the pandemic was brought under control by government.

But encouraging judges to embrace technological tools to attend to cases during this lockdown period, Falana in the letter to the CJN said, “Since the Federal Government has relaxed the lockdown by allowing markets, shops and stalls selling food and groceries to open to customers between the hours of 10:00am and 2:00pm daily, the National Judicial Council ought to review the suspension of court sittings to enable them attend to urgent matters to ensure that thousands of people who are either awaiting trial or under investigation are not subjected to unlawful detention.”

That strategy has already been adopted in Kenya where 4,800 prisoners had been released by judges after hearing their cases through Skype and Zoom, a report by CNN said.

Solider in detention for shooting police officer

0

A military man in Tema is currently in detention after allegedly firing at a policewoman at a checkpoint whilst enforcing the COVID-19lockdown at Tema New Town.

Little information is given about the soldier as well as the victim.

Confirmation from Tema Regional Police Headquarters revealed that the soldier fired at Lance Corporal Francisca Tenge without confrontation.

It’s, however, not clear whether the weapon was discharged accidentally.

Police-military relationship in the region has been very cordial as both have played major roles in enforcing the law aside from the lockdown.

The victim is currently on admission at Tema General Hospital and is responding to treatment.

Meanwhile, Medical Director of Tema General Hospital, Dr Richard Anthony, says Lance Corporal Francisca Tenge is responding to treatment after being shot close to her thigh this morning.

According to him, the victim was not bleeding when she was rushed in and was immediately attended to by the surgical team.

“There were an entry and exit wounds but the surgical team did their best and can confirm she is responding to treatment,” he said.

Asked how long it could take the victim to recover, he said that will depend on her body constitution.

“There is no cause for alarm as we have attended to her. She will recover in due course,” the Medical Director assured.
