Oscar Pistorius, the former Olympic runner who was convicted of murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013, was released from prison on parole on Friday, January 5, 2024. He served about nine years of his 13-year sentence.
He was granted parole by the South African correctional services department, which deemed him fit for social reintegration. His release was opposed by Steenkamp’s mother, who said he never accepted responsibility for killing her daughter.
Pistorius claimed he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder when he shot her four times through a locked bathroom door at his home in Pretoria. His case sparked a global debate about gender-based violence and justice in South Africa.
