A group of men from the Hasidic Jewish community built a secret tunnel beneath a historic Brooklyn synagogue. This tunnel was discovered at the world headquarters of the Hasidic movement Chabad, also known as Lubavitch, in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Crown Heights.
The discovery of the tunnel led to a clash between the police and the men who tried to defend the makeshift passageway.
Nine members of the New York Hasidic Jewish community were arrested and charged over the secret tunnel. The men are charged with criminal mischief, reckless endangerment, and obstructing governmental administration.
A brawl broke out after police found a group of young men blocking efforts to inspect and fill the tunnel with cement.
It is unclear who built the tunnel, how they did it, and what their motivations were.
