Veterinary Services Department prepare to conduct Covid-19 tests

The Veterinary officer for Western Region Doctor Simon Gbene has revealed that the Veterinary Services Department in Sekondi-Takoradi is a Bio-Safety Level 3 (BSL–3) facility which is capable of handling work involving microbes which can cause serious and potentially lethal disease via the inhalation route.

He stated that the facility is one of the topmost in the whole of West Africa and effective as that of Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR)

“In fact, our facility will be able to test about a thousand samples each day,” he stressed.

According to Doctor Simon a team of biomedical scientists from the Public Health Laboratory of the regional health referral center at Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital is expected to come and complement their staff to enable them run the tests effectively. Besides, some of the staff have been trained and ready to start testing for COVID-19.
