ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) A BLESSING OR A CURSE?

0

This is a shocking and disturbing story of how artificial intelligence (AI) can be used for malicious purposes. Jennifer DeStefano, an Arizona mom, received a phone call from an unknown number that sounded exactly like her daughter Briana, who was on a ski trip with her dad. The voice was crying and begging for help, saying that she had been kidnapped by some bad men who demanded a ransom of $1 million. A man then took over the phone and threatened to harm Briana and drop her in Mexico if DeStefano did not comply. He also told her not to call the police or anyone else, or he would kill them both.

Brianna’s mom was terrified and panicked, but she managed to alert some other parents who called 911 for her. She tried to negotiate with the fake kidnappers, who lowered the ransom to $50,000 and instructed her to get into a white van with a bag over her head. She realized that this was a trap to lure her into being abducted as well. Fortunately, the police arrived and confirmed that Briana was safe and sound with her dad, and that the whole thing was a scam using AI to clone her daughter’s voice.

DeStefano later testified before the US Senate Judiciary Committee about the dangers of AI and the need for more regulation and protection.

The first day of the US moon landing in decades is expected to be in 2025. This is the target date for NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to land the first woman and the first person of color on the lunar surface. The Artemis program was originally planned for 2024, but it was delayed by one year due to a funding shortfall and a lawsuit over the landing vehicle

However, before NASA’s crewed mission, two private companies in the US are attempting to land robotic spacecraft on the moon in early 2024. These are Astrobotic Technology and Intuitive Machines, which are part of a NASA-supported effort to kick-start commercial moon deliveries. If successful, they will be the first US moon landings since the Apollo program ended in 1972, after sending 12 astronauts to the moon.

Intense heat wave condition continues to plague northern India, with several areas across the region recording temperatures close to 46 degrees Celsius (115 degrees Fahrenheit). India is experiencing extreme heat and the cause of this is the combination of meteorological factors, such as atmospheric pressure, wind patterns, precipitation and climate change. According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), heat waves in South Asia are made at least 30 times more likely by climate change. Average temperatures in India have risen by around 0.7% between 1901 and 2018, partly due to climate change.

The implications of the extreme heat in India are severe and multifaceted to the extent that there have been Increased mortality and morbidity due to heatstroke, dehydration and other heat-related illnesses. A study by the Lancet found that India saw a 55% rise in deaths due to extreme heat between 2000-2004 and 2017-2021.  There have also been reduced productivity and income for millions of people, especially the poor and daily-wage laborers employed in outdoor work. Exposure to heat also caused a loss of 167.2 billion potential labour hours among Indians in 2021, resulting in loss of incomes equivalent to about 5.4% of the country’s GDP.

Accelerated melting of snow and ice in the mountainous regions, leading to flash floods, glacial lake floods and reduced water availability in the long term. Not just this there have been crops damaged and reduced agricultural yields, affecting food security and livelihoods of farmers.

India is currently experiencing deteriorated air quality and increased risk of fire outbreaks, affecting human health and ecosystems. To cope with the extreme heat, India has implemented heat action plans in some cities, which involve issuing alerts, providing cooling shelters, distributing water and educating the public about heat prevention measures. However, these plans are not enough to address the root causes and long-term impacts of the heat problem. India needs to invest more in climate adaptation and mitigation strategies, such as improving urban planning, enhancing renewable energy sources, promoting water conservation and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

STAY SMART ON BLACK FRIDAYS

0

With the current hardship in Ghana, Ghanaian are always on the outlook for deals that are less. But it’s also an opportunity for bad people to take advantage over unaware victims.

Black Friday is a great opportunity to find bargains, but also a time to be careful of scams and frauds. Here are three red flags to look out for during the Black Friday season

  1. Non-delivery scam: You buy something online from an unknown seller, but the item never arrives and the seller disappears. To avoid this, stick to reputable retailers, check for a secure site with HTTPS and a lock icon, and use a credit card or PayPal for payment
  2. Gift card scam: You are asked to pay with a gift card instead of a credit card or PayPal. This is a common way for scammers to steal money from you, as gift cards are hard to trace and refund. Never pay with a gift card unless you are buying it from a store or website you trust
  3. Fake website scam: You are lured to a fake website that looks like a legitimate one, but is designed to steal your personal or financial information. To avoid this, be wary of links in emails, texts, or social media posts that offer too-good-to-be-true deals. Always type the website address yourself or use a bookmarked link. Also, look for spelling errors, odd design, and slow loading times that may indicate a fake site.

These are just some of the common scams that you may encounter during the Black Friday season. To protect yourself, always do your research, compare prices, and read reviews before buying anything online. Also, use security software like Norton 360 with LifeLock to make browsing and shopping safer and help protect you from identity theft. Stay safe and happy shopping!
