Circlips

0

A set of circlips is made up of the retaining and snap rings that are fastened to hold firmly onto shafts. They are used in solving technical problems relating to clearance diameter (The space between one gears minor diameter and the mating gears major diameter), radial installation (a length of appropriately rated cable feeding one power point to another) amongst others.

They are mostly used in Electric Motors, Turbines, Pistons, Vehicle construction, Brake adjustment, Optical devices, Sprocket chains, Electronics, Roller/Wheel bearings, Gearing/Transmission, Clutches

There are two major types of circlips and they are External Circlip Standard and Internal Circlip Standard. The external circlip standard is mostly used for shafts with grooves whilst the Internal Circlip Standard is used for bores with grooves

Hydraulic Seals

0

Hydraulic seals come in a form of circular rings that are used between hydraulic cylinder components.  There are a number of components within a hydraulic cylinder of which hydraulic seals happen to be part of. These seals prevent leakages in cylinders.

Hydraulic seals have spaces within them that enable them to fit well on cylinders and other devices. They are highly effective and prevent leakages even when fluids are high to their brim.

They are made from a wide range of materials of which some are rubber and polyurethane. Those made from rubber are soft, don’t crack easily and last longer. Those made or Polyurethane are cheaper and common.

Types of hydraulic seals

V-Ring Seal

A V-ring seal is made of rubber and used on shafts to prevent dirt, moisture and other harmful materials from entering an oil seal, housing or any other vital part of shafts.

V – Ring Type S

V-ring seal – type S usually comes in a wide and pointed form. It provides a solid grip on a shaft it has been fixed on and comes in a wide range of sizes.

This type of seal also performs the role of preventing dirt, dust, water, or mixtures of these media from entering while positively retaining oil.

It can be applied by stretching it to fit the shaft that its being mounted on and spins around the shaft during its operation

V – Ring Type A

The typical design of a V-Ring is comprised of the body, the flexible joint and the sealing lip. They are used in combination with other types of seals such as shaft seals and pre-sealing elements for bearings and shafts.

They are mostly used in mechanical and plant engineering fields, electric engines, transmissions, agricultural machines, bearing base and rolling mills.

Shaft seal

Shaft seals prevent the passage of fluids along a rotating shaft. These seals are necessary when a shaft extends from a housing (enclosure) containing oil, such as a pump or a gear box. It comes in a form of leather, rubber and silicone

Most of them are made up of elastic rubber ring which is attached to a metallic ring that is tight around the hole in the housing through which the shaft extends.

Common applications of shaft seals are: Construction machinery, Fork-lift trucks, Injection molding machines, Agricultural machinery, Loading platforms and Standard cylinders

Sprockets

0

A sprocket is a mechanical tool with teeth designed purposely to rotate and facilitate motion together with chains that have the same thickness and pitch. Sprockets are used in bicycles, cars, motorcycles and other machines.

Sprockets tend to last longer because of their metal steel property. They are mostly made from aluminum.

Types of sprockets

Single strand roller chain sprocket

They fit well a wide range of applications that involve both light and heavy loads when in motion. Suitable machines for single strand roller chain sprockets are construction, agricultural and manufacturing machines, conveyors, vehicles and power transmission systems.

Duplex sprockets or Double strand roller chains sprocket

These types of sprockets are mostly found in elevators, planters, trenches and paper mill equipment

Triplex sprockets or Triple strand roller chain sprocket

They are mostly found in mining, agriculture and heavy-duty equipment by applying them to chains and for effective work results

Spherical plain bearing

0

A spherical plain bearing is made up of the housing and a ball unit within it. The housing of the bearing reduces friction and allows the whole component to operate smoothly.

Spherical plain bearings are used to accommodate shafts and rods with misalignments. The manner in which they have been designed enables them to manage heavy loads being mounted on equipment within which they operate in order to provide a stable performance provided they have been lubricated well and good enough to function properly.

These types of bearings do not require much maintenance and are mainly suitable for applications that involve rotation and high load carrying capacity.

Common applications of spherical plain bearings are material handling machines, agriculture, railway engineering, construction machinery, hydraulic steel structures, power generation, oil field exploration, mining and aggregate processing, wind turbines, gear drives and rolling mills

Additional holiday for Ghanaians during the Christmas break

0

Ghana’s Minister of Interior, Ambrose Dery, has announced Tuesday, December 27 will be officially observed as a holiday in Ghana.

According to the Minister, Christmas Day falls on Sunday, and the following day is also a holiday which is Boxing Day, hence Tuesday, December 27 will be observed as a public holiday throughout the country.

This directive comes from an Executive Instrument from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, Act 601.

Hub bearing

0

Hub bearings play a very important function in enabling wheels to move freely while contributing to the safety of a car. They join bearings and devices, and increasingly include special coatings and greases for higher performance.

Hub bearings when damaged cause a steering wheel of a car to shake. This movement may continue or would be more obvious at a turning point. Hence it is important to avoid speeding more than necessary when the hud bearing is damaged.

The hub unit which is attached and works together with the main component supports cars at their wheels as well as the remaining part of the hub bearing connecting to vehicles.

Thrust ball bearings

0

Thrust ball bearings are mainly used in vehicles to support pressure of loads caused by coiling gears in the gearboxes of vehicles. Thrust ball bearings when lubricated facilitate higher speed application of machines within which they operate.

A wide range of industries and applications require the use of thrust ball bearings and they are:

  1. Mining and construction industry: Corrosion resistant materials are used in the production of thrust ball bearings which allow them to support heavy and demanding equipment within the mining and construction industry.

  1. Industrial / heavy duty machines: Thrust ball bearings are required during the rotation of shafts of heavy industrial machines hence the need to have them installed within these machines for their effectiveness. Heavy duty machines that require the use of thrust ball bearings are drills and cranes

  1. Generators and water turbines: Thrust ball bearings when used in generators and water turbines reduce friction and drag.

  1. Transportation: In transportation, they help improve the work of engines and propellers.

Types of thrust ball bearings

Cylindrical roller thrust bearings

Needle roller thrust bearings

Tapered roller thrust bearings

Spherical roller thrust bearings

Ghana suspends payment of external debt

0

Ghana has temporarily suspended the payment of part of its external debt, including Eurobonds, as it seeks to restructure it after an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) last week. This measure aims to “prevent a further deterioration of the economic, financial and social situation of Ghana,” he said. Excluded from this suspension are the payment of multilateral debt and new debts contracted as of Monday.

So last week the government signed a $3 billion bailout agreement with the IMF to shore up public finances. The agreement includes a debt restructuring. Many Ghanaians fear that the deal will force the government to impose further austerity measures that will further burden the population.

With historic inflation of more than 50%, the collapse of the local currency by 50%, prices at the pump that have doubled and a debt whose repayment swallows half of the state revenue, Ghana is grappling with a serious economic crisis. It’s the worst in decades.

High Court Rules that UK Sending Asylum Seekers to Rwanda is Legal

0

The British government has reached an agreement with Rwanda that would deport migrants who arrived in Britain illegally on a one-way trip to Rwanda, a country with a questionable human rights record, to have their asylum claims processed.

Under Britain’s agreement with Rwanda, applicants granted asylum would be eligible to remain in Rwanda but would not be eligible to return to Britain. Britain had to cancel the first flight to Rwanda in June after the European Court of Human Right blocked the move, saying that the plan carried “a real risk of irreversible harm.” Human rights groups say Britain’s pact with Rwanda is inhumane and the African nation does not have the capacity to process the claims.

Chaining of Persons with mental health conditions in Ghana

They Broke Her Spirit but Should Instead Break the Chains

When I found Arita, she was standing at the entrance of a dark and musty room at Mt. Horeb Prayer Centre, in eastern Ghana. A heavy metal chain laid on the ground beside her. She had been shackled on and off during her four years at the center, she said. At the moment she could walk freely, but the sight of the chains was a constant threat of being shackled by staff, even for small infractions such as speaking or singing too loudly.

Arita was brought to the camp by her family, who, like many people, believed demons or evil spirits caused mental health conditions and that prayer could heal them. She didn’t know if she would ever leave. She had no message or request for the government. It seemed that the prayer camp had broken her spirit.

Human Rights Watch has documented the practice of chaining people with mental health conditions in prayer camps and spiritual healing centers in Ghana for more than a decade. Although the practice was banned in 2017, and Visiting Committees and a Tribunal were recently created to enforce the ban, I still saw dozens of people in chains last week.

I thought about Arita when I went to sleep last night. I thought about her again this morning when I went to brush my teeth, a simple task that seemed almost a privilege with no chains around my ankles. Since I met Arita, I have been thinking about what it means to live without agency and dignity. No one should ever live like she has.

Ghana’s Deputy Minister for Health Tina Mensah agreed. When we met her last week, she promised to ensure that institutions that detain people with mental health conditions are monitored, saying “we are all human beings.”

This month, Ghana’s Visiting Committees and Tribunal begin monitoring these institutions. The government should operationalize Mensah’s commitment and resource these teams to ensure that they can enforce the ban on shackling. The government should also strengthen rights-respecting, community-based mental health services, so people like Arita can get help where they live.
