CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL IN ACCRA LACKS STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY

0

The Management of the Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital in Accra has bemoaned the structural defects and inadequate staff of the medical facility.

Parts of the building that serve as wards have developed cracks with exposed iron rods.

The Medical Superintendent of the Children’s Hospital, Dr. Maame Yaa Nyarko listed electrical faults, weak buildings, worn-out equipment and inadequate staff as the main challenges affecting quality health service provided to patients.

“The building that houses most of our wards, administrative floor and the consulting rooms has a lot of cracks and rusty iron rods. In addition, that building has a lot of electrical problems that requires that the whole building has to be rewired. We also have plumbing issues in that building. Initially, we tried to fix it but we realized that because of the structural defects it will not be a good decision to do that,” she said.

She added that “even though we have received a lot of Medical Officers, almost all of them are females in their reproductive age; they are having their babies and going on maternity leave and that gives us staff gaps. Aside the structural deficit, we have overcrowding in the emergency room. The number of clients is more than what the facility can accommodate. We have a lot of equipment that are old, and we need to get rid of them and some are beyond repairs.”

The Health Minister, Kwaku Agyeman Manu assured that a structural integrity test will be conducted immediately to inform the next line of action.

In a reassuring tone, he admitted that “The facility is quite old and what we came to see after reports were made to the Ministry is not something anybody will like to see. When we went round the building, the structure of this building needs a lot of work to be done on it. So quickly, we are going to ask the consultant, Julius, to look at what we call structural integrity test, and they will advise us on what we are supposed to do.”

He added that if “there is something they can do to repair and maintain it in good shape, then it’s fine. If they recommend that we pull down then we may have to go look for money to begin to do that but we want them to come and see and send us a report. On the issue of inadequate staff, we will address that”.

The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on Wednesday, 7th April 2021, cut the sod for the construction of the five million cedi (GH¢5 million) Ghana Award House, a new administrative building for the Head of State Award Scheme.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony, President Akufo-Addo explained that since its inception in 1967, the Head of State Award Scheme has challenged and touched the lives of many young Ghanaians, with some 750,000 young people participating and benefitting from the Scheme.

“I have always been excited about the work being done by the Award Scheme, and that is why I continue to urge them to ensure that as many young Ghanaians as possible benefit from it. To achieve this ambitious target, a befitting administrative office for the Scheme will be required. The provision of a Ghana Award House, to serve this purpose, is my commitment towards driving the agenda of the Award Scheme,” the President said.

Once completed, the Ghana Award House project will be a two-storey office block, with a two hundred (200) capacity conference room, and training facility designed to house the National Secretariat of the Head of State Award Scheme.

It will be constructed at a cost of five million cedis (GH¢5 million), and it will help drive growth, impact, and the effective and efficient delivery of the Award Scheme to all young people in Ghana and beyond.

The President noted that the “completion of the Ghana Award House project will put Ghana ahead of many of the countries running the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award”, and will mean that Ghana “will be the second country in Africa, after the Presidents’ Award of Kenya, and one of the few countries globally, to have its own administrative office.”

He also announced that, in support of the operation of the Award Secretariat, its operational cost will be borne by the Office of the President, under the direct supervision of the Chief of Staff.

“Vehicles are also to be allocated to the Secretariat for its use. In addition to the one-million-cedi contribution to this project, Government pledges to do what it can to ensure that the project is completed in the next thirty-six (36) weeks,” he added.

President Akufo-Addo called on individuals, corporate bodies, especially in the construction industry, to join hands and bring this project to fruition, explaining that they can donate bags of cement, blocks and other building materials in support of this project.

“Together, we can help make this project a reality. I thank all who have contributed consistently towards the success of the Award Scheme. Now is not the time to rest on our oars, but to help realise the vision of an Award Scheme that is truly self-sustaining,” the President added.

SHS 3 SCHOOL RESUMPTION POSTPONED TO MAY 5

0

The Ghana Education Service (GES) says it has rescheduled the reopening for Senior High School (SHS) Form 3 students to May 5.

In a Facebook post, it said this was after management considered a proposal from the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS).

The Service said, “This applies to all Form 3 students (single track and double track schools). Further details will be announced. All other arrangements on the calendar remain unchanged.”

Last month, GES postponed the reopening for SHS freshers to March 18 through to March 21.

Anthony Boateng, the Deputy Director-General, in a press release said the action is to give students who have had issues with self-placement time to complete the process.

Also, he encouraged others who have not completed their school’s admission process to use the extension to complete the process.

The Service added that the rescheduling will also help parents have adequate time to prepare their kids for school as well as give schools additional time needed to prepare to welcome them.

GES has also urged parents to ensure that their children leave home with adequate nose masks to protect themselves amid Covid-19, while management of schools has also been tasked to ensure strict adherence to Covid-19 protocols.

MINORITY LEADERSHIP NEEDS A TOTAL OVERHAUL – GYAMPO

0

Associate professor in the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Gyampo, is calling for an overhaul of the leadership of the Minority in Parliament.

It follows recent resignation of North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, from the appointments committee of Parliament in the aftermath of the approval of Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.

“Something must be done to the leadership of the minority group in parliament. The current NDC leadership in parliament isn’t the same leadership that fought for the principles of secret balloting to be respected in the election of Speaker of Parliament. This is not the leadership that snatched the Speakership of Parliament from the NPP,” Gyampo posted on Facebook.

He added: “They must either be brought back on track or there should be a total overhaul. If this won’t be done by the party’s leadership outside parliament, the grassroots must do so. The survival of the party and its fortunes in any future election, is contingent on a timeous response to this selfishness being displayed in Parliament, that disregards the fact that some even had to die to produce the kind of Hung Parliament we now have.”

Prof Gyampo believes overhauling the leadership of the Minority in Parliament is crucial in reviving the current parliament to play its role effectively.

“Reinvigorating the current Hung parliament to be able to play its role as countervailing authority to the powers of the executive, is also dependent on how responsive the party takes the call for an overhaul of its leadership in parliament,” he said.

He further commended Ablakwa and Bolga Central MP, Isaac Adongo, for their stance in the wake of the approval of Ofori-Atta.

“The two MPs who have so far demonstrated that they have conviction, must be saluted. It doesn’t lie in the mouth of those who have benefitted from the politics of convenience of the minority group, to critique the action of those who have taken exception to the conduct of their leaders in Parliament.”

FDA WARNS PUBLIC AGAINST CONSUMPTION OF WASHED FISHES ASHORE

0

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has warned the public against consuming any suspicious fish following reports that the fish washed ashore at the Osu Castle beach may have been sent to various markets.

According to the Authority, it has also begun laboratory investigations to ascertain whether such fish are good for consumption or not.

Some fish were found along the shores of the Osu Castle beach on Friday.

Similarly, over 80 mammals believed to be melon-headed whales were washed ashore at the Axim-Bewire beach in the Nzema East Municipality on Sunday.

This attracted many residents, some of whom picked them up either for consumption or for sale.

But the FDA in a statement advised the public to desist from such acts.

“The FDA in collaboration with other state agencies have been engaged in investigating and addressing the matter of various species of fishes washed ashore on some beaches since Friday, 2nd April 2021. While laboratory investigations are ongoing, the Authority warns the general public to desist from
consuming the fish washed ashore in view of the potential risk to health and safety.”

Meanwhile, to prevent the washed-ashore fish from entering into the food chain, FDA inspection teams have been dispatched to fish markets including the Osu Mandela market in the Korle-Klottey Municipal Assembly.

The Authority has also intensified its public education and sensitization on quality parameters and signs of contamination of fish in the fishing communities and fish markets.

FDA regional offices along the coastline in the Central and Volta regions have also been alerted and are replicating similar efforts in towns along the coast.

“In this regard, the general public is cautioned to be guided by the freshness of the eyes and redness of the gills of fish that they seek to purchase. The washed-ashore fish typically show signs of popped out and unclear eyes, dull colouration of gills, bloating around the abdominal areas and/or possible oozing of foul scented fluids”, the FDA further advised.

“The public is hereby advised to report all suspected cases of possession or selling of these washed-ashore fishes to the FDA or local authorities. The consuming public is also cautioned to be wary of both fresh and recently smoked fish which are being sold at unusually low prices”, it added.

INVESTIGATIONS FOLLOWING THOUSANDS OF FISHES WASHED ASHORE

0

At least 60 dead dolphins and other large fishes including tuna have been washed ashore in some coastal communities of Ghana, authorities have confirmed.

The Fisheries Commission, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Marine Police Unit of the Ghana Police Service have begun investigations into the fish mortality which has been recorded at Axim in the Western Region, Osu in the Greater Accra Region and Keta in the Volta Region.

The dead fishes were washed ashore between Friday 2 April and Sunday 4 April 2021, officials confirmed.

In a statement on Sunday, the Fisheries Commission said it is carrying out tests at its laboratories to establish the cause of death of the fishes.

“Upon arrival at the beach the team noticed that there were dead small pelagic and demersal fishes at the shore,” the statement issued by Executive Director of the Fisheries Commission, Michael Arthur-Dadzie, said.

It added: “Initial observation of the fishes showed no wound /lesions on their bodies. It is to be noted that after two to three days of death of an animal pathological signs change. Samples of the fish were collected on ice to be examined critically in the laboratory.

“Sea water samples have also been collected at the beach in the Korle Klottey District in the Greater Accra Region.

“Examinations will be carried out on the fish gills and other histological examinations will equally be conducted to ascertain any pathological cause. The sea water samples collected will be analysed for physical, chemical and other biological parameters.

“The colour of the sea and temperature are normal. We assure everyone that we are working hard to ascertain the actual cause of mortality of the fish.”

MAN KILLED AND DUMPED WIFE ON “BORLA”

0

A young man believed to be 24-years-old identified only as Isaac has allegedly murdered his ‘wife’ and deposited the mutilated body on a dumping site.

The incident occurred at Onakwase a farming community near Kofi Pare in the Ayensuano District of the Eastern Region.

Starr News gathers that a misunderstanding ensued between the cohabitating couple about a month ago.

Abigail Larbi believed to be in her twenties, therefore, stormed out of the house with her two children including a two-year-old baby, to stay with her mother at Kofi Pare -a nearby community.

Three weeks ago, the suspect only identified as Isaac, however, lured his angry ‘wife’ to board a motorbike he took to the community under the pretense of hanging out with her, at a time her mother had stepped out from the house.

The young woman was never seen again in the community.

Police investigations led to the arrest of one of the Okada riders suspected to be an accomplice.

During interrogation, the rider gave police information about the incident but claimed the suspect briefly confided in him before leaving the community to Accra.

“The suspect after committing the heinous crime called the rider to bring his luggage to the Dokrochiwa community. So after collecting the bag, he left for Accra on that fateful day,” a resident narrated.

Further investigation by Police led to the arrest of the prime suspect – Isaac at Madina in the Greater Accra Region on good Friday.

The suspect was, however, reticent despite being pushed by Police detectives.

He later broke his silence to a family member who visited him at the Police cell.

Attempts by Police to take the suspect to the crime scene on Saturday, April 3, 2021, were met with anger by some residents who besieged the scene demanding the release of the suspect to be lynched.

Due to the volatile environment, the suspect was kept in Police vehicle under guard when the investigators went to the dumping site where the mutilated body of the deceased was deposited to take inventories. They took the decomposing body to the morgue for further investigation.

A resident told Starr news,” the tongue, vagina, and breast and even the head were believed to have been removed by the suspect.”

Samuel Otu Larbi a former Assembly Member told Starr News “three weeks ago the lady went missing. Meanwhile, the suspect had taken someone’s motorbike and rode to Accra. So investigation led to the arrest of the guy who gave his motorbike to him. The boy also opened up to police that the suspect asked him to bring his bag to him. So there was pressure on the boy to help find the whereabouts of the suspect. So he was arrested at Madina. The suspect was tight-lipped until his Uncle went to the Police cell to speak to him before he divulged the information. So the Uncle left the police cells and went to where the body was dumped to verify before informing the police”.

The acting Public Relations Officer of the Eastern Regional Police Command, Sergeant Francis Gomado told Starr News, the Command was yet to be briefed on the incident.

THE NPP DUMSOR IS DIFFERENT FROM NDC DUMSOR

0

Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Yaw Buaben Asamoa has described the second round of power outages as a new kind of ‘dumsor’.

According to him, this round of dumsor is unlike the previous one experienced during the erstwhile Mahama-led administration which was caused by a low power generation capacity.

He said the current dumsor regime is occasioned by power transmission challenges, a situation which he says is more critical than before.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile Saturday, Mr. Asamoa said, “This generation is different from the other generation. This second generation is a verb for a new situation which is an addition to the problems we were experiencing before; transmission challenges.

“So whatever is happening now, from my understanding, factually, is that we have adequate generation and we have increased consumption and that is putting pressure on our ability to transmit and distribute. So the infrastructure for transmission has come under extreme pressure.”

He added that due to the challenges being faced by GRIDCo to efficiently transmit power, it could lead to large swathes of the country experiencing power cuts.

“So the difference with the traditional dumsor where one transformer in the neighborhood trips and the neighborhood goes off and a trip on GRIDCO main line is that, that’s a wholesale line and that means once it trips, a whole region could go off even if a particular part of that region wasn’t the direct source of the trip. So we had the situation where one day the entire country went off.

“The key thing now is that you could suffer an outage almost innocently because you’re on a wholesale line which is GRIDCO. So this is a more critical situation than before that we need to quickly upgrade transmission in order to stabilize the system.”

He, however, assured Ghanaians of the NPP government’s dedication to ensuring stable electricity supply to all.

“I know for a fact that government’s main objective is a consistent and affordable availability of power to ensure jobs, incomes as well as social use,” he said.

Meanwhile, GRIDCO at a press briefing says construction works on the Pokuase and Kasoa substations which are expected to be completed in July would rectify the intermittent power outages.

They are therefore pleading with customers to bear with the power sector for the next three months as they work on resolving the challenge permanently.
