I’D NOT PROSECUTE MY APPOINTEES ON HEARSAYS – AKUFO-ADDO

0

President Akufo-Addo says he will not punish his appointees in the fight against illegal mining in the country based on hearsay.

“I am determined to enforce the laws on illegal mining no matter the subject, high or low. I will, however, not act on hearsay or mere allegations without more. I will not hesitate to act though where the evidence is hard before the police.

“And I will do so irrespective of the standing of the person or persons involved. That is the true meaning of equality before the law,” the President said at the launch of the National Consultative Forum on small scale mining in Accra Wednesday.

The President however called for a nonpartisan approach in the fight against the menace which has destroyed a larger part of Ghana’s water bodies.

“We cannot have one part of the political divide campaigning for galamsey in the bush and the other waging an official fight against galamsey in the open,” President Akufo-Addo said as he launched the forum on Wednesday, April 14, 2021.

“It is absolutely crucial that the deliberations of this consultative dialogue be candid and devoid of partisanship or narrow parochial interests”.

For his part Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Jinapor, said he will need the help of Ghanaians in dealing with the canker.

“We will require a holistic honest national effort anchored on the integrity of action. We will require a candid collaborative and collective action.

“Whatever sets of measures that will emanate from the deliberations over the next two days, if approved by the government will be implemented diligently,” Mr. Jinapr said.

Some former appointees of the president were fingered to be aiding illegal mining in an investigative piece done by journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas. Some of them were captured on tape.

EU OBSERVERS SUGGEST DEFINIT TIMELINE FOR PARLIAMENTARY ELECTION RESULTS CHALLENGE

0

The European Union Election Observer Mission for the 2020 elections is proposing definite timelines for the determination of parliamentary election petitions.

It suggested that “parliamentary election petitions be commenced 21 days after the declaration of results just like presidential election petitions.”

According to a report released by the mission, such a mechanism will enhance public confidence in the electoral process.

The Supreme Court has set a timeline of 42 days to rule on presidential election petitions but no such regime exists at the parliamentary level.

The EU observers believe that such parameters “will increase stakeholder access to an effective remedy and increase public confidence.”

There have been 16 court challenges to election results at the parliamentary level.

The New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress are each challenging the results from eight constituencies, mainly seeking to have the elections turned in their favour.

The NPP for instance is challenging results in the Buem, Kintampo North, Savelugu, Pusiga, Jomoro, Assin North, Banda and Krachi West constituencies.

The NDC on the other hand is challenging results in the Techiman South, Hohoe, Tano South, Tarkwa Nsuaem, Essikado Ketan, Tema West, Zabzugu and Sefwi Wiawso constituencies.

The 16 challenges raised at the constituency level concern alleged electoral malpractices, eligibility of candidates and disenfranchisement of some eligible voters

Mr Yaw Osafo-Maafo is now a Senior Presidential Advisor to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Mr Osafo-Maafo who served as a Senior Minister in President Akufo-Addo’s first tenure but retired and chose to remain in the background in the second term disclosed his new role on Tuesday, April 13, 2021.

He was addressing the Birim Central Municipal Assembly at Akyem Oda in the Eastern Region on Tuesday, when he made the disclosure, reports Graphic Online’s Samuel Kyei-Boateng.

Mr Osafo-Maafo said President Akufo-Addo made the appointment last week.

The experienced politician served as a Member of Parliament for Akyem Oda for three terms from 1997 to 2009.

He also served as a Minister of Finance and Education under President J.A.Kufuor between 2001 and 2007.

SACK VISIONLESS MD NOW – ECG WORKERS

0

The Junior and Senior Staff of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) are demanding the immediate removal of their Managing Director, Mr. Kwame Agyeman-Budu from office over alleged mismanagement of the company.

The staff said they took the decision at a joint National Executive Committee held last Friday at the ECG Training School in Tema.

They also alleged that several petitions to Mr. Agyeman-Budu to involve its rank and file in revenue mobilization since 2020 have been ignored.

The workers claim the MD’s continuous stay at post will collapse the electricity distribution company because to them, “he is grossly deficient when it comes to matters relating to administrative and corporate governance”.

They also accuse their MD of breaching procurement processes.

“A clear example is the award of contracts of some Six (6) substations where the recommendations of the evaluation committee were sidestepped and awarded to other companies,” the Junior and Senior Staff Union said in a statement.

“The Union decries the alarming rate at which the company’s technical and commercial losses are galloping. A conservative estimate puts the current system loss figure at over 34% as at February 2021, and there are no concrete strategies in place to bring them down in the short and medium term,” the statement added. They have therefore warned that if their concerns are not addressed by Friday, April 23, 2021, they will advise themselves.

Breaking the news on Twitter, the Twitter CEO thanked President Nana Akufo-Addo for opening the doors for the billion-dollar company.

As a champion for democracy, Ghana is a supporter of free speech, online freedom, and the Open Internet, of which Twitter is also an advocate. Furthermore, Ghana’s recent appointment to host The Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area aligns with our overarching goal to establish a presence in the region that will support our efforts to improve and tailor our service across Africa.

Whenever we enter new markets, we work hard to ensure that we are not just investing in the talent that we hire, but also investing in local communities and the social fabric that supports them. We have already laid foundations through partnerships with Amref Health Africa in Kenya, Afrochella in Ghana, Mentally Aware Nigeria Initiative (MANI) in Nigeria, and The HackLab Foundation in Ghana.

As part of our long-term commitment to the region, we’ll continue to explore compelling ways we can use the positive power of Twitter to strengthen our communities through employee engagement, platform activation, and corporate giving.

We still have much to learn but we are excited to listen, learn, and engage. Public conversation is essential to solving problems, building shared ideas, and pushing us all forward together. We can’t wait for the next step on that journey.

ACHIMOTA SCHOOL: COURT DISMISSES RASTAFARIAN STUDENTS PLEA FOR ADMISSION.

0

The Human Rights Division of the Accra High Court presided over by Justice Gifty Agyei Addo has dismissed an ex-parte injunction application from one of the Rastafarian students who was denied admission by the Achimota Senior High School.

The interlocutory injunction filed on April 6 was for enforcement of the fundamental human rights of the applicant.

The applicant wanted a mandatory injunction order to be served on Achimota School to admit the applicant for him to attend classes pending the final determination of the substantive matter.

But the court said the applicant, failed procedurally on both interim injunction which was to last for 10 days or interlocutory injunction which was to last throughout the hearing of the case.

The court said, there would be a travesty of justice on the respondents considering the application was filed ex-parte.

Justice Addo said, whether the application was for interim injunction or interlocutory injunction, it cannot be granted.

It is the case of the court, such a decision will prejudice the outcome of the case because the respondents have not been put on notice.

7 days order

However, the court said it will rather expedite action in the substantive matter.

To do this, the court said, instead of the 21 days allowed by the rules for the respondents to file the responses when served, they should file them in seven days.

Hearing of the substantive matter has been adjourned to April 22, 2021.

AKUFO-ADDO DIRECTS PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS TO PREPARE FOR EARTHQUAKE

0

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has issued a number of directives to Ministries, Departments and Agencies in response to a report compiled by a committee of experts tasked to assess the country’s state of preparedness for the occurrence of earthquakes.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ conference organised by the Ministry of Interior, on Thursday, 8th April 2021, at Tang Palace, President Akufo-Addo noted that the series of earth tremors experienced by the country in recent times, coupled with the confirmation that Ghana is susceptible to earthquakes along the southern belt and the Akwapim-Togo range, resulted in the establishment of a Technical Committee to prepare “A Framework for Refocusing Ghana’s Earthquake Preparedness and Response”.

Endorsing the report and recommendations of the Committee, together with its action plan, the President noted that it is the collapse of structures during earthquakes that is responsible for human and economic losses.

“This means that to avoid or reduce these losses, we need to ensure that buildings, including dwellings, dams and bridges, are structurally competent and resilient to earthquakes of a higher magnitude,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo continued, “Constructing well-engineered structures, including dams and roads, and retrofitting important lifeline buildings, such as hospitals, schools, churches, and mosques, cannot be compromised. That is why I urge the Engineering Council of the Ministry of Works and Housing to ensure that a comprehensive integrity audit of all public buildings and structures is conducted, and Government appropriately advised.”

The President also urged the Ghana Geological Survey Authority to advise Government on the logistical needs and equipment required by the Authority to undertake round the clock monitoring of seismic activities for urgent action.

Knowing what to do, he said, in the event of an earthquake, is crucial to survival, adding that it is important that all Ghanaians know what to do to remain safe and alive should such an unfortunate event occur in future.

“I have already instructed the leadership of NADMO to liaise with the Ghana Education Service to help incorporate learning themes on protection against earthquakes and other disasters in the curricula at the pre-tertiary education level. Again, I have encouraged NADMO to embark on a sustained education campaign for the entire population, in this regard. I have requested regular updates from the Director-General of NADMO on progress made,” President Akufo-Addo noted.

To the Ministries of Works and Housing and Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, the President urged them to collaborate with the Ghana Institution of Engineers to develop a scheme that will entail home-owners retrofitting their homes to make them resistant to earthquakes, and compelling prospective home-owners to build in accordance with defined standards.

“I want to reiterate my total commitment as President to ensuring that Government protects the entire citizenry from the effects of earthquakes and other disasters that might ravage any part of the nation,” he said.

Government, according to President Akufo-Addo, has sufficiently demonstrated its determination to make the nation resilient to the effects of disasters, adding that “we will continue to equip NADMO and, indeed, all response agencies, to enhance their operational effectiveness”.

To the stakeholders gathered, he indicated that “the only option is to work collaboratively, devoid of turf wars and other counter-productive tendencies. Disaster preparedness and mitigation are a shared and collective responsibility. Let us put our shoulders to the wheels and safeguard Mother Ghana.”
