I WASN’T SERIOUS WITH MY CAREER – KP BOATENG

0

Ghana international, Kevin-Prince Boateng spoke of his regret over his conduct during his time at Premier League club, Tottenham Hotspur.

In an interview with La Repubblica, Boateng said he didn’t take his career seriously enough as a young player, particularly while he was at Spurs.

According to Boateng, despite his huge talent, he failed to make a significant mark in England because of his poor attitude on and off the field.

“I’ll go back and say: I didn’t treat football as a job. I was an idiot. I had talent, but I trained the bare minimum, an hour on the field. I was the last to arrive and the first to leave. I’d be out with friends. I had money, I lived like a king. I’d never been to the gym. That changes your later career,” he said.

He also spoke about his lavish lifestyle while in North London, including a 24-hour splurge on three luxury vehicles.

Kevin-Prince Boateng currently plays for Italian side Monza
Boateng revealed that he purchased a Lamborghini, a Hummer and a Cadillac, all in a day, as he lived like a ‘king’, something he regrets now.

“I bought three cars in one day when I was at Tottenham: a Lamborghini, a Hummer and a Cadillac. To the youngsters, I tell them: “You cannot buy happiness”.

Family issues and trouble getting into Spurs’ squad, he explained, got to him, with the cars giving him some semblance of happiness at the time.

‘I didn’t play, I had family problems, I was out of the squad. I was looking for happiness in material things: a car makes you happy for a week. I bought three to be happy for three weeks.’

Quite the journeyman, Kevin-Prince Boateng’s travels across Europe have seen him play for a host of Europe’s top clubs including AC Milan, Dortmund and Barcelona.

He has also had stints at Las Palmas, Portsmouth and Schalke 04.

He’s won five trophies across his career including the League Cup at Tottenham and the La Liga title with Barcelona.Boateng currently plays for Serie B club Monza.

DOMELEVO THANKS AKUFO-ADDO FOR URGING HIM TO ACCEPT APPOINTMENT

0

Former Auditor General, Daniel Yao Domelevo has revealed that President Nana Akufo-Addo was one significant person who encouraged him to take up the appointment as Auditor General when he was appointed by John Mahama in the tail end of the latter’s administration in 2016.

Speaking during a thanksgiving ceremony at the Christ the King Church in Accra to celebrate his retirement, Domelevo expressed appreciation to President Akufo-Addo for encouraging him to take the job.

Narrating how it happened, Daniel Domelevo said President Akufo-Addo after winning the election but was yet to be sworn in, called him and encouraged him to “go and take the job,” while he was contemplating acceptance or rejection of the appointment.

“I also will like to thank the President, Nana Akufo-Addo for working with me. In fact, in 2016 when I was appointed, and I was confused, as to whether I should accept or reject [it], a call came through from Dr. Matthew Opoku Premeph and after greeting him, he said hold on for the [then] President-elect, so Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo encouraged me, he said ‘go and take the job.’ That is why I am very grateful to him,” Domelevo indicated.

The former Auditor General also thanked John Mahama for appointing him in the first place.

“I thank him [Mahama] for the opportunity to serve my motherland,” Domelevo said.

Among the list of people Mr. Domelevo spoke fondly about at the ceremony was the group of anti-corruption Civil Society Organizations who supported him while in office.

He said corruption in Ghana is a “dangerous enemy” that cannot be dealt with by one person.

“I must say thank you to the anti-corruption CSOs or institutions fighting corruption [in Ghana]. I am very grateful. If you fight corruption alone, you won’t last. Corruption is one dangerous enemy you can’t fight alone, and you can’t fight quietly. If you fight corruption quietly you will be finished in a minute,” he remarked.

WE’D NOT ACCEPT AGYAPA DEAL IF OLD DEAL IS BROUGHT BACK – HARUNA IDDRISU

0

Members of the Minority in Parliament have indicated that they will kick against the controversial Agyapa Mineral Royalties deal if it is brought back to Parliament for approval.

The caucus maintains that the deal remains bad and will not serve the interest of Ghanaians if passed.

The leader of the caucus, Haruna Iddrisu in an interview with Citi News after President Nana Akufo-Addo’s delivery of the 2021 State of the Nation Address on Tuesday, March 9, 2021, said he is not convinced about the propriety of the deal.

“Agyapa [coming] back [means] corruption is back. We will not support it. I am very certain in my mind and I remain unconvinced,” he said.

While delivering his first State of the Nation address in his second term in office, Nana Akufo-Addo hinted that the controversial deal that failed to see the light of day in the 7th Parliament will be resurrected in the 8th Parliament.

Members of the Minority who kicked against the deal when it first came up in Akufo-Addo’s first term insist that they will not back it when the president retables it in Parliament.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Yapei-Kusawgu, John Abdulai Jinapor, in an interview on Eyewitness News also kicked against the attempt to bring back the rejected deal to parliament.

“The interest of the Minority is that of Ghana. We will be part of any process that will inure to the benefit of this country. We haven’t even seen the document, we haven’t seen what they are bringing but given the record of this government and our experience with them, I will be surprised if they bring anything good, that is why I maintain that if it comes in this form, it should be considered dead on arrival,” he said.

“Our position is clear that if Agyapa is brought back with all those issues, it should be considered dead on arrival. We will not be part of any attempt to mismanage the future resources and mortgage the future of the youth to some selected individuals and their personal gains. That will not happen in this parliament,” he added.

Meanwhile, the President of IMANI Africa, one of the dozens of civil society organizations that raised alarm and called for the withdrawal of the deal said they are not surprised about the decision to reintroduce the deal and will wait to sight the new document that the government will present on the deal to make their position clear.

“For many of us in CSO space we are not entirely surprised… We are just waiting. These are early days yet to I would believe that the president would have taken the lessons and then made sure that the deal comes back in another form that meets the demand of everybody who has concerns about it,” he said

MY GOVT IS OPEN TO SCRUTINY – AKUFO-ADDO

0

President Akufo-Addo has defended the integrity of his government.

He said his government accepts scrutiny and is also accountable. The President stressed that this was in line with past ideals of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Coming off the last few months where the resignation of the Special Prosecutor and the forced resignation of the Auditor General have prompted more corruption concerns in the Akufo-Addo administration, the President however says he is committed to “managing public resources with integrity, fairness, openness, and accountability.”

Speaking during his State of the Nation address, President Akufo-Addo said: “ours is not a government that shies away from public scrutiny. Far from it. That is not the NPP way.”

President Akufo-Addo recalled the repeal of the Criminal Libel law in 2001 when he was Attorney General and even the creation of the Office of Special Prosecutor office as evidence of his party’s commitment to democratic ideals.

“That is why my government, in 2019, enacted the Right to Information Act, which had been shirked by previous administrations, despite decades of agitation by journalists and civil society groups,” the President also said.

He also said his government “more than doubled funding for accountability institutions of state, like CHRAJ, EOCO, the Judiciary, and the Auditor General.”

He reiterated his past words saying: “Ghana will be defined by integrity, sovereignty, a common ethos, discipline, and shared values.”

“This requires a forward-looking vision for our country, enabling us to confront our challenges and embrace our opportunities, not one fastened in the rear-view mirror. It is a Ghana beyond aid.”

Telecommunication giant, MTN Ghana, has warned that vendors, who charge customers a fee when they sell MTN airtime to them through the Electrical Virtual Distribution (EVD) system otherwise known as credit transfer, will be sanctioned.

MTN has reduced the number of physical recharge cards on the market compelling more people to rely on mobile money and EVD to purchase credit.

Checks show that some vendors charge as much as 15 percent of the amount of credit a customer purchases through the EVD.

But according to MTN, vendors already make their profit from the transfer and are not expected to charge extra.

In an interview with Citi News, the General Manager of Southern Regional Sales of MTN Ghana, Abubakar Mohammed, said vendors who charge extra money from EVD transfers will be sanctioned.

“EVD agents are not to make any extra charges. Their fees are incorporated in the airtime they purchase from us. We give them a 5 percent cut. And so customers are to get the exact amount they purchase. They should insist on what s due them. If a customer feels he is being cheated, there are avenues to seek redress. You can either call the shortcode 100 and complain or visit any of the MTN centres and report the vendor.”

“Some of the actions we take when such complaints come before us is to warn the vendors to desist from them or block them from using our EVDs. Our aim is to protect the customer and ensure that they get value for whatever they buy,” Mr. Mohammed explained

CABINET APPROVES POST COVID-19 ECONOMIC RECOVERY PROGRAM

0

Cabinet, after a three-day meeting at Peduase Lodge has approved a blueprint expected to put Ghana’s economy back on track in the post-pandemic era.

In the blueprint, known as the Post COVID-19 Economic Recovery Programme, the Nana Akufo-Addo administration’s priority is to pursue policies and programmes that will build a robust economy and create more jobs.

Briefing the media on the development, Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, said the blueprint will among other things focus on Ghana’s fiscal regime and macroeconomic situation.

“If our stability has been shaken because of the need to stretch our resources to respond to COVID-19, and if the fiscal anchor which was the deficit that we were trying to bring down to 5% [has not materialized], and if we are now watching it become clear from the Bank of Ghana figures that are coming in that our debt to GDP ratio is getting worse because of the COVID-19 programme, then you can bet that these two will become some of the key parts of the post-COVID economic recovery programme.”

The minister said the government is looking to invest massively in the government’s flagship programmes as well as sectors of the economy that will stimulate the economy and ensure a quick recovery in a way that will ensure growth and also create more jobs.

According to Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the cost of the Economic Recovery Programme will be announced in the 2021 budget expected to be presented to parliament by the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu on Friday, March 12, 2021.

Meanwhile, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah says the government is considering widening the tax net and increasing existing taxes to internally mobilize resources to fund the post-covid economic recovery programme.

LIVING WITHIN THE BRITISH ROYAL FAMILY IS DIFFICULT – DUTCHESS OF SUSSEX

0

The Duchess of Sussex has said she found life within the British Royal Family so difficult that at times she “didn’t want to be alive any more”.

In a deeply personal TV interview, Meghan told Oprah Winfrey that she did not get help when she asked for it.

She said a low point was when Harry was asked by an unnamed family member “how dark” their son Archie’s skin might be.

Oprah later said Harry had told her it was not the Queen or the Duke of Edinburgh who made the comment.

In new footage not included in the original interview, Prince Harry was asked if the couple left the UK because of racism, and replied: “It was a large part of it.”

In new footage not included in the original interview, the prince recalled a conversation he had with someone with media connections who advised him not to take on the British tabloid press.

He said he was told he had to understand that the UK was “very bigoted”. But Harry recalled that he immediately responded: “The UK is not bigoted, the UK press is bigoted, specifically the tabloids.”

The prince told Oprah: “But unfortunately if the source of info is inherently corrupt or racist or biased then that filters out to the rest of society.”

The highly-anticipated interview with Oprah, which the couple were not paid for, aired overnight in the US.

During the two-hour CBS special, to be screened in the UK on ITV at 21:00 GMT on Monday night and on ITV Hub, Courtesy of Harpo Productions/CBS, the couple covered a range of topics, including racism, mental health, their relationship with the media and Royal Family dynamics.
