Liberia’s newly elected but old president is Joseph Boakai, who won the presidential election in November 2023 with 50.64% of the vote. He defeated the incumbent president George Weah, who got 49.36% of the vote. Mr. Boakai is 79 years old and will be the oldest president in Liberia’s history when he takes office on Monday, 22 January 2024.

He was previously the vice-president under Ellen Johnson Sirleaf from 2006 to 2018. Mr. Boakai campaigned on a platform of fighting corruption, improving the economy, and providing better public services. He also promised to reconcile the country after years of civil war and political instability. He received the support of many opposition parties and influential figures, including former rebel leader Prince Johnson, who helped him win votes in the north-eastern region of Nimba.

Mr. Boakai’s victory was seen as a sign of dissatisfaction with Mr. Weah’s administration, which was accused of mismanagement, nepotism, and human rights violations. Many voters also complained about the rising cost of living, the lack of jobs, and the poor state of infrastructure and health care.

According to Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency, an Israeli missile strike targeted a building in the Mazzeh neighborhood, where the Iranian embassy and several diplomatic missions are located. The strike killed at least five Iranian military advisers and a number of Syrian forces in Damascus. One of the dead was Hojjatollah Omidvar, the deputy chief of the Quds Force intelligence unit in Syria. Iran blamed Israel for the attack and said it was a violation of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The attack in Damascus comes amid escalating tensions between Iran and Israel, as Israel’s war with Hamas in Gaza enters it’s fourth month. Iran is a major ally of Hamas and Hezbollah, two militant groups that have been fighting against Israel in Gaza and Lebanon respectively. Iran has also been supporting the Syrian government of President Bashar al-Assad in the civil war that has been raging since 2011.

Israel has been conducting airstrikes in Syria to prevent Iran from expanding its influence and transferring weapons to it’s allies. This is the second high-profile assassination of an Iranian official in Syria in less than a month. In December 2023, an Israeli airstrike killed a senior Iranian general there.

United Airlines is facing a financial loss in the first quarter of 2024 due to the grounding of its Boeing 737 Max 9 planes, which were involved in a mid-air incident on Jan. 5, 2024. A panel called a door plug blew off the side of an Alaska Airlines plane, prompting the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to order inspections of 171 Max 9 jets. United has 79 of these planes in its fleet, more than any other carrier.

The FAA also recommended inspections of another Boeing model, the 737-900ER, which uses the same door design. United has about 130 of these planes. The grounding and inspections have forced United and Alaska to cancel hundreds of flights this month, affecting their revenue and operations. United expects to lose between 35 cents and 85 cents per share in the first quarter.

Boeing has said it will improve the quality of inspections in its manufacturing processes in response to the incident.
