US DEFENCE GO HARD ON HOUTHI FORCES

0

The US Defense is saying that it will continue to conduct defensive strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen, as long as the rebels pose a threat to international shipping and regional stability. The US has carried out four rounds of strikes on Houthi missiles, radars and drones since Jan, 11, 2024, in response to the group’s attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

The US has also designated the Houthis as “global terrorists”, reversing a previous decision by the Biden administration. The US says the strikes are intended to protect its personnel and the free flow of international commerce in one of the world’s most critical waterways.

A landslide in southwestern China’s Yunnan province has buried 44 people from 18 households on Monday, according to state media. The landslide was caused by a combination of factors, including the steep slope, the loose soil, the heavy snowfall, and the freezing and thawing of the ground.

The landslide hit the mountain village of Liangshui shortly before dawn, when most residents were asleep. A total of 18 homes were destroyed, and more than 500 people evacuated. The area was hit by heavy snow on Sunday night, and the temperature still lingered below freezing on Monday.

More than 300 rescue workers were deployed along with dozens of fire engines and earth-moving equipment to search for survivors.
Landslides are common in Yunnan, a remote region of China where steep mountain ranges butt against the Himalayan plateau. In 2017, a landslide in Sichuan province killed more than 100 people.

The world’s first malaria vaccine rollout began in Cameroon on Monday, January 22, 2024. The vaccine, called RTS,S or Mosquirix, was developed by GlaxoSmithKline and approved by the World Health Organization. It is intended to protect children under five from the deadly disease, which kills about 600,000 people in Africa every year.

The vaccine requires four doses and will be given for free to all infants up to six months old, along with other routine childhood vaccines. Cameroon is the first country to start the mass vaccination program, after successful trials in Ghana, Kenya and Malawi. Another 19 African countries plan to join the program this year, with hopes of reaching 6.6 million children.

The vaccine is not a “silver bullet”, as it has a relatively low efficacy rate of about 36%. However, it is expected to save tens of thousands of lives and reduce the burden of malaria on health systems and families. The vaccine will be most effective when combined with other preventive measures, such as insecticide-treated bed nets and anti-malarial drugs.
