The football match between Ghana and Mozambique at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) was a dramatic one, as Mozambique scored two goals in the stoppage time to hold Ghana to a 2-2 draw.

The result likely spells the end of the tournament for Ghana, who finished third in Group B with only two points.

Ghana’s goals were both scored by Jordan Ayew from the penalty spot, one in each half. Mozambique’s goals were scored by Geny Catamo from the penalty spot on 91 minutes and Reinildo Mandava’s header on 94 minutes. The fans of the Black Stars after the match made their frustrations known to the team, as some fans waited to see the players leave the stadium and booed them.

SWEDEN NATO MEMBERSHIP BID APPROVED BY TURKEY

0

Turkey’s parliament voted to ratify Sweden’s application to join NATO on Jan. 23, 2024, after more than a year of delays. Turkey had been blocking Sweden’s bid over various issues, such as Sweden’s alleged support for Kurdish militants and its stance on the 2016 coup attempt in Turkey. Turkey also demanded some concessions from Sweden, such as the U.S. approving the sale of F-16 fighter jets and other equipment.

Sweden applied to join NATO in 2022, following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Sweden’s membership would strengthen NATO’s presence in the Baltic Sea region, which faces increasing pressure from Russia. Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson welcomed Turkey’s decision and said that Sweden was one step closer to becoming a full member of NATO.

However, Sweden’s NATO bid still needs to be approved by Hungary, which has not yet ratified it. Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban invited his Swedish counterpart to Budapest for talks, but Sweden’s Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom said he saw no reason to negotiate with Hungary at this point. NATO’s Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg urged Hungary to complete its national ratification as soon as possible, saying that Sweden’s membership would make NATO stronger and safer.

He was sledding with his friend on a snow day when his sled crossed the road and collided with a GMC Envoy driven by a 49 year old man.

Protestor Mohammad Ghobadlou, a 23year old Iranian man was executed on Tuesday, January 23, 2024 by the Iranian authorities. He was convicted of murder and “corruption on Earth” for allegedly running over and killing a local official with his car during a protest near Tehran in September 2022.

Ghobadlou’s execution has sparked an outcry from human rights groups, who said he faced an unfair trial marred by torture allegations and that his mental health condition was ignored. According to Amnesty International, Ghobadlou had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder as a teenager and had stopped taking his medication two months before the protests. International law and standards prohibit using the death penalty against people with mental disabilities.

Ghobadlou is the ninth person to have been executed in relation to their involvement in the nationwide protests that erupted in 2022 after the death in custody of Mahsa Amini, a 22 year old woman who was detained by morality police for allegedly wearing her hijab improperly. Hundreds of people have been killed and thousands detained in a violent crackdown by security forces, which have portrayed the protests as riots.
