UG AND UCC BASIC SCHOOLS CLOSED DUE TO SENIOR STAFF STRIKE

0

Authorities of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) and the University of Ghana have closed indefinitely all sections of their basic schools.

The closure will affect pupils from the kindergarten level through to the Junior High School level.

In separate statements, the UCC and University of Ghana authorities said the closure was necessitated by the strike embarked upon by the Senior Staff Associations of Universities nationwide.

“We are compelled to defer because the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana has asked its membership to suspend all work scheduled until further notice,” the University of Ghana said in a statement.

The Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana announced a nationwide strike over outstanding Tier-2 contributions of its retired members.

The Association is also demanding an improved market premium and non-basic allowance as well as the migration of public universities onto the Controller and Accountant General payroll system.

It also noted the lack of study leave with pay, medical care for staff and families among others as issues that needed addressing.

The First Vice Chairman of the Senior Staff Association, Mohammed Zakaria has vowed that members of the association will remain at home until their concerns are addressed.

Following a 10-month break, basic schools were set to resume school fully from Friday, January 15, 2021.

BRING RAWLINGS’ BODY HOME FOR BURIAL – AWADADA OF ANLO

0

The people of Anlo have petitioned Torgbui Agbesi Awusu II, the Awadada of Anlo to demand that the body of former President Jerry John Rawlings be brought home for burial.
They said the longest-serving President and properly installed Chief of Anlo consciously remained and died an Anlo and must be buried according to Anlo customs, which meant that his body must be conveyed to and buried in his ancestral home.

A petition jointly authored by the three wings of the Anlo State, their military groups and the Anlo citizenry and presented by Regent Torgbui Tamakloe, said the people of Anlo and the entire Ewe stock acknowledged the need for the State to honour their celebrated son, but it must not be done contrary to their (Anlos’) traditional and customary practices.

“We are keenly aware of his place in the history of Ghana. We also appreciate the need for the State to honour him and have him buried at the newly created Military Cemetery as needed, but our chieftaincy customary practices and usages also strongly demand that we do not pay our last respect to our departed chiefs and people of JJ’s stature in public. So for convenience, chiefs are always the last persons to send bodies of departed colleagues to the village.”

The petition said there were precedents of former heads of states taken to their roots for burial noting, it followed that every now and then, various cultural and ethnic groups often made requests of this nature to enable them meet stringent demands of their cultural practices.

“This is not the first time that a request is being made for a former head of state to be buried among his people to assure proper observances of customary beliefs and practices. Requests of this nature have been made at various times in the history of Ghana. For example, this request was made for Dr Kofi Abrefa Busia for his burial at Wenchi, his home.

Ex-President Edward Akufo-Addo, the father of the reigning President His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his burial at Kyebi; Dr Hilla Limann for his burial at Gwolu, his home; and recently in a far away South Africa, Ex-President Nelson Mandela was not buried in Pretoria but in his hometown and much more recent was that of ex-President Robert Mugabe, who was also not buried in Harare but at his hometown.”

Torgbui Gbordzor III, Dusifiaga of Anlo who received the petition on behalf of the Awadada assured the petitioners that he would rightly convey their request to Torgbui for consideration.

Earlier on Tuesday, The Agbotui, Tamakloe and Allied families, families of the late Mr Rawlings wrote to the Presidency asking for changes to be made to the burial date and place of their kinsman to now become January 29 and 30 and Anloland respectively.

Original arrangements included the main funeral at the Black Star Square, Catholic Mass, lying in state at the Accra International Conference Centre, two-day hosting of traditional mourning by the Anlo Traditional Council and subsequent burial of Mr Rawlings at the Military Cemetery in Accra on January 27.

FA CUP: MAN U TORE LIVERPOOL IN FA CUP ROUND 4

0

Bruno Fernandes’ superb 78th-minute free-kick gave Manchester United victory in a thrilling FA Cup tie with old rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford.

Liverpool led a fantastic contest through Mohamed Salah, who then equalised after Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford had struck for the hosts either side of the break.

But in a game which had everything last week’s drab stalemate between this pair at Anfield lacked, Fernandes came off the bench to have the final word after Fabinho had fouled Edinson Cavani on the edge of the area.

Fernandes might have been slightly off the pace in recent games but when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needed his £47m inspiration to come up with another special moment, the Portuguese delivered, bending his shot round the wall and beyond Allison’s reach.

The victory earns United a home meeting with an in-form West Ham side managed by former boss David Moyes in the fifth round.

But the search for form goes on for Liverpool, whose only win in seven games since that seven-goal hammering of Crystal Palace came against Aston Villa’s kids in the last round, and who have a meeting with Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham looming on Thursday.

COVID 19: ACFTA IS CRITICAL TO POST COVID RECOVERY

0

A World Bank report has re-emphasised the importance of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement in becoming a game changer on the continent, especially, as African countries seek to bounce back from the devastation caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the World Bank, economic growth in the region is projected to decline from 2.4 percent in 2019 to between −2.1 percent to −5.1 percent in 2020, the first recession in the past quarter century. It will also cost the region between US$37 billion and US$79 billion in terms of output losses for 2020.

Again, the report adds, the COVID-19 crisis is also contributing to increased food insecurity as currencies are weakening and prices of staple foods are rising in many parts of the region. Also, policy responses that result in subregional trade blockages will increase transaction costs and lead to even larger welfare losses.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, the bank says, these policies will disproportionately impact household welfare as a result of price increases and supply shortages. Welfare losses would amount to 14 percent relative to the no-COVID-19 scenario if countries were to close their borders to trade.

Furthermore, border closings, which were intended to stop importation of the virus to other countries, have disproportionally affected the poor, particularly small-scale cross-border traders, agricultural workers, and unskilled workers in the informal sector.

It is for these reasons that the Breton Woods institution sees an advantage in the continental trade deal which will create the largest free trade area in the world, measured by the number of countries participating, saying it will boost trade and other economic activities to help countries come back to a path of growth.

“A successful implementation of AfCFTA would be crucial. In the short term, the agreement would help cushion the negative effects of COVID-19 on economic growth by supporting regional trade and value chains through the reduction of trade costs. In the longer term, AfCFTA would allow countries to anchor expectations by providing a path for integration and growth-enhancing reforms.

Furthermore, the pandemic has demonstrated the need for increased cooperation among trading partners. By replacing the patchwork of regional agreements, streamlining border procedures, and prioritizing trade reforms, AfCFTA could help countries increase their resiliency in the face of future economic shocks,” the World Bank stated in a report titled: The African Continental Free Trade Area, Economic and Distributional Effects.

The trade pact connects 1.3 billion people across 55 countries with a combined GDP valued at US$3.4 trillion.

Despite the envisaged advantage of the trade agreement, critics have raised questions about the implementation of the deal, arguing it has been rushed and not adequately planned. But Secretary General of the AfCFTA Secretariat, Wamkele Mene has debunked such claims, saying it is a process that must start from somewhere.

“In some parts of the world we get criticism. We get criticized and we are told that we are rushing things and that we are not quite ready. But I want to ask those who hold that view, tell me of a trade agreement where all countries are ready at the same time. I don’t know yet. I have never heard of a trade agreement, where in that particular arrangement, every single country is ready on day one.

Not to my knowledge, it doesn’t exist. And so, I regret that as Africans we are held to a much higher standard to how trade agreements should operate in practice. We negotiated this agreement in record time and we are still continuing with negotiations, but there have been other arrangements that have taken much more than us to negotiate and to enter into force. There are other agreements and negotiations that have been going on for decades, and we have been able to do this in less than five years,” Mr. Mene said.

THROW OUT MAHAMA’S STAY OF PROCEEDING MOTION – AKUFO-ADDO

0

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the 2nd Respondent in the 2020 Presidential election petition before the Supreme Court has filed a 20-paragraph affidavit to oppose to the Stay of proceedings application by the Petitioner, former President John Mahama.

He has described the motion for stay as unmeritorious and one meant to stall the hearing of the petition. He, however, prayed the court to dismiss it.

Lawyers of former President Mahama, last Thursday filed a stay of proceedings at the apex court, arguing that, his motion for review on his interrogatories be heard before the hearing of the petition proceeds.

Following the refusal of his request to the apex court allowing the EC to answer some 12 interrogatories, the Petitioner filed for a review.

But that review motion has been table for hearing on January 28, 2021, that is two days after the apex court had commenced hearing of the petition.

The petitioner described that move as one that will occasion on him a “miscarriage of justice” and want the review motion heard first.

But the 2nd Respondent, in a motion to oppose to the motion for stay of proceedings, argue that, “there are no exceptional circumstances occasioning a miscarriage of justice that warrant the grant of the instant application for stay of proceedings.”

He prayed that “In the event, this honourable court ought to dismiss this application as unmeritorious and calculated to stall the hearing of the petition that he himself has initiated.”

The seven-member panel of the Supreme Court chaired by Justice Kwasi Anin Yeboah, with support from Justice Yaw Appau, Justice Samuel Marful-Sau, Justice Nene Amegartcher, Justice Prof Nii Ashie Kotey, Justice Mariama Owusu and Justice Gertrude Torkornoo will sit on the matter on Tuesday, January 26, 2021.

MZBEL ATTRACTS THE WRATH OF GA CHIEF PRIEST

0

A number of women from the Ga traditional area stormed the offices of Despite Media Group on Saturday afternoon to register their displeasure at some allegations made by Musician Mzbel against them.

Mzbel on the 16th of January, 2021 on UTV, accused Ga Traditional court of fraud.

According to the Ghanaian songstress, she claimed that the Chief Priest of the council has defrauded her to the tune of GHC 2,000 over a case she brought before the them against Afia Schwarzenegger.

Mzbel indulged the services of the ‘Nai we’ to solve a fracas and claimed the Chief Priest took Ghs2,000 from her, whiles giving the assurance that her matter will be resolved in a very short time.

According to her, the matter has been pending for weeks, only for her to be told that the chief priest of the Ga Traditional Council is on admission at a health facility.

This according to the Ga Traditional priests is a dent on the image and credibility of their culture and traditions, and therefore came to express their anger to management of Despite Media because Mzbel used their platform to disgrace them.

The traditional elderly women dressed in red, black and white, numbering about 10 came to the premises of Despite Media on Saturday afternoon January 21, 2021 with eggs, pots and bottles of Schnapp to chant and perform ritual in the middle of the road.

RAWLINGS FUNERAL ON COURSE

0

The government says preparations are underway for the state funeral of former President, Jerry John Rawlings.

The state funeral for Mr Rawlings is expected to be held at the Independence Square in Accra from 9:00 am to 11:00 am on January 27, 2021, according to a note verbale the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration sent to Diplomatic Missions, International Organizations and Honorary Consulates.

Information Minister Designate, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah livingavenuegh.com all participating bodies in the funeral are currently rehearsing at the Black Star Square and Accra International conference centre ahead of the scheduled events.

“Today, if you visit the Black Star square and Accra International Conference, the various teams that are doing the preparatory work are gradually getting their work to an advanced stage. We look forward to the people of Ghana paying their final respect and salutations to the former President even in these COVID times.”

Mr Rawlings, died in the early hours of Thursday, November 12, 2020, at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.

He will be laid-in-state from 24th to 26th January 2021 at the foyer of the Accra International Conference Centre from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm daily.

There will also be a Mass on 26th January 2021 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am at the Holy Spirit Cathedral in Accra.

It is after the above arrangements that the family of the late president is demanding to take charge of the remains of Mr Rawlings to carry on with some traditional rites.

Funeral for the late President was initially scheduled for December 23, 2020, by the State but that upset the Anlo Traditional Council and the Agbotui, Tamaklo, Husunu and Allied families which wanted to be consulted.

The Council led by the Awadada of the Anlo, Togbui Agbesi Awusu II, said the arrangements made at the time were not in accordance with the customs and traditions of the Anlo people, leading to the initial indefinite postponement of the funeral rites of the late former President.

PROFILE OF SAMUEL ABU JINAPOR – LANDS MINISTER DESIGNAT

0

Samuel A. Jinapor is a politician, a dedicated member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and a qualified Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Ghana.

He graduated from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics, and specialised in Biomedical Physics.

His intellectual thirst and political aspirations led him to enrol to be trained as a lawyer – a goal he accomplished successfully. Consequently, he was called to the Ghana Bar in 2012.

As a newly enrolled lawyer, he undertook his pupillage with the reputable Messrs. Kulendi @ Law, an Accra-based commercial and corporate law firm, from October 2012 to August 2013. He studied under the tutelage of the renowned lawyer, Yonny Kulendi, who is now a Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana.

Within a relatively short period, Mr. Jinapor rose to the position of Senior Associate. In this capacity, he developed the skills for quick thinking and oratory, and he served as an advocate in major commercial and corporate litigations. Whilst at the firm, Mr. Jinapor acted as a transactional lawyer for several complex, commercial negotiations, both domestically and internationally.

Again, as Senior Associate, he was periodically assigned to manage a team of lawyers from diverse backgrounds. Over the years, he had the rare opportunity of representing major foreign companies in Ghana as a Solicitor and Legal Advocate, both in Ghanaian Courts and Arbitral Tribunals.

Mr. Jinapor earned his Master’s Degree in Law (LL.M) in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) from the Faculty of Law, University of Ghana, in May 2017. In the course of his studies, amongst others, he successfully took academic sessions in International Commercial Arbitration, Labour Law, Law and Society.

POLITICAL LIFE

Mr. Jinapor is regarded as a highly motivated and dynamic, rising young politician. He is energetic, intelligent, resourceful, and he combines effective communication skills, with detailed legal knowledge, to dissect complex problems, and deliver satisfactory outcomes, whether working alone or as part of a larger team.

His interest in the country’s public affairs encouraged him to join politics in 2004, and he has since been a widely known and excellent Political Activist. His first foreign relations exposure came when, at an early age of twenty-three (23), he had the unusual opportunity to accompany the then President John Agyekum Kufour, on his historic State Visit to the United Kingdom (UK) in 2007, as a Communications Aide, where he made appearances on shows of various media houses in the UK.

The watershed moment came, when in 2007, he was privileged and honoured to be appointed by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, then presidential aspirant of the New Patriotic Party, as his Campaign Aide in the 2007 NPP presidential primaries. This is a position he held in both the 2008 and 2012 general elections.

In the 2016 general elections, Mr. Jinapor played a major political advocacy role for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its presidential candidate, Akufo-Addo. He was seen and heard on major media and campaign platforms across the country, taking on the incumbent Mahama government, and promoting the policies of his Party, the NPP, a task he executed brilliantly with considerable courage and tenacity, earning him the admiration of many.

In 2017, President Akufo-Addo appointed him as Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Operations at the Office of the President, at a very youthful age of 33, the youngest in the history of Ghana to occupy such a position.

As Deputy Chief of Staff, he assisted the Chief of Staff in mobilising government machinery to support the execution of the President’s agenda for the country. Having worked, closely, in various capacities with President Akufo-Addo, both in opposition and government, Mr. Jinapor has gained considerable experience in the workings of government.

In 2020, whilst still performing his demanding task as Deputy Chief of Staff, he contested the parliamentary seat of Damongo, the maternal hometown of former President John Dramani Mahama, the 2020 Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and won that highly competitive election with a significant margin of victory.

He unseated the NDC’s two-term Member of Parliament and Ranking Member for Energy and Mines, Hon. Adam Mutawakilu. Since the creation of the Damongo Constituency in 2012, the NPP has never won the Presidential and Parliamentary elections.

Thus, the victory of Mr. Jinapor in this Constituency came as a big surprise to many political pundits and commentators. He has since been sworn in as a Member of the 8th Parliament of the 4th Republic.

President Akufo-Addo has nominated him as the Minister responsible for Lands and Natural Resources in the second term government of his government. If approved by Parliament, he will be the youngest to have occupied this portfolio.

He is happily married to Naada B.D. Jinapor, a Lawyer and head of the Corporate Law Department of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) of Ghana. Their marriage is blessed with four daughters.

The President in a statement Thursday said the list of Ministers will be submitted to Parliament today.

The statement noted the President has scrapped the Office of the Senior Minister.

It further noted eight out of the 46 Ministers will be women.

“In all, President Akufo-Addo will appoint a total of thirty (30) Ministers, and sixteen (16) Regional Ministers, bringing the total number of Ministers to forty-six (46). Eight (8) of this number are women – six (6) Ministers and two (2) Regional Ministers. This is the list that will be submitted to Parliament by the President on Thursday.”
