FOMENA MP DEMANDS MASS RESIGNATION OF NPP CONSTITUENCY EXECUTIVES

0

Member of Parliament-elect for Fomena Constituency Andrews Amoako Asiamah has called for the resignation of the entire constituency executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The call for the entire Fomena Constituency executives to resign, according to the MP-elect, falls in line with his laid down conditions to determine whether to rejoin the party or otherwise.

The development makes the fate of the NPP to become the Majority in Parliament is on the balance as the independent MP-elect intensifies demands before crossing carpet to the NPP in Parliament.

The latest condition is for the dissolution of the entire executives as he maintains “the current crop of NPP executives in Fomena are corrupt, incompetent and I will not be able to work with such executives”.

Speaking on Akoma FM‘s morning show GhanAkoma on Thursday, December 31, Special Aide to the MP-elect Seth Oduro described the current executives in Fomena as failures as he explained that “the executives have made it clear to us that they cannot work with lawyer Asiamah even if he crosses carpet to the NPP, therefore we have advised ourselves that it is likely the executives might sabotage us”.

“That is why we are calling for their resignation as part of our conditions to rejoin the party and make it the Majority in Parliament.”

This call comes at the back of the resignation of the Constituency Chairman Akwasi Nti Asamoah on health grounds.

However, the MP-elect is of the view that “the resignation of the Constituency Chairman is not enough. The entire executives who failed the party must all resign else our decision to cross carpet will be withheld”.

OPINION: WHY TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS MAY NOT RESUME IN JANUARY

0

The Outbreak of the Corona Virus in March 2020 brought with it, a halt on academic activities. Basic, Senior High, and Tertiary institutions had to be closed down as part of the government’s control measures against the spread of the virus.

There have been various timelines for the resumption of academic work especially for students at the Tertiary levels, however, the Government in October cancelled all planned school resumption due to uncertainties in the spread of the virus until January 2021.

As January is fast approaching, The University of Ghana, KNUST and other tertiary institutions have issued timelines for school resumption. Most Students are anxious to get back to school due to fatigue and boredom.

Through all these, the Government has set Thursday, December 30 as the date for a cabinet meeting where a definit decision on school resumption shall be made. As a student and a significant stakeholder in the field of academia, I seek to provide my opinion on why students who cant wait to return to school may have to wait at least one more month for resumption.

First, permit me draw your attention to the fire raging COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic, in the last few weeks have proven to be growing in new dimensions. America, Europe and Southern Africa are seeing a new wave of the spread. There is also a new strain of the virus which has over 60% infection rate. These happenings may give government a feeling of giving more time to study the behavior of the virus in the early parts of 2021.

Another important factor to note is the state of Ghana’s economy. The pandemic brought a close to many economic activities. Most of the worse hit sectors are still struggling to recover and these have terrible consequencies on government revenue. Government expenditure during the outbreak leaves very little fiscal space for governmets spending. Government would therefore be handicapped to provide protective equipments to all levels of academic insitutions in Ghana in January, some of which few may include fumigation of campuses, provision of sanitary conditions, provision of PPEs amongst others. Medical facilities would also have to be equipped to handle any potential outbreak. These, in my opinion, cannot be met across the board in January.

With the points outlined above, I am of the opinion that, Government may intend to reopen schools in batches begining from the basic and secondary level before tertiary evels. this may allow government the space to carefully monitor the spread, build the fiscal space as well as the capacity and preparedness of medical facilities for any potential outbreak. Again, the government may recommend a track systerm to manage congestions in schools in order to minimize the risk.

it is based on the above that students at tertiary levels may have to wait for at least one more month in 2021 before joining colleagues for in class academic work. Thank you.

OPINION: THE UG DOUBLE TRACK INITIATIVE: A MASTER PLAN TO KEEPING A SINKING SHIP AFLOAT

0

The University of Ghana, through its Business Committee, has issued the School’s academic calendar for the 2020/21 academic year.

Monitoring various platforms, most students have reservations on the double-track policy. According to the schedule, Final year students and Freshmen shall report to School in January for a six week lecture period instead of the 12 lecture weeks. Second and third-year students shall take their turns after the first batch in March.

This is in response to the university’s quest to minimize the spread of COVID-19 whiles ensuring smooth academic activities.

This arrangement, however, does not seem to be in sink with the General student population especially for the fact that many students are home fatigued the long stay at home, whereas other sections argue the arrangement retards academic progress.

In this episode, I seek to give my take on why the arrangement is a better option, especially at this point.

First of all, COVID-19 has proven not to be under control. Reports of second and third waves have been reported widely in Europe, America, and in Africa. There’s also a new strain of the virus from the UK, which according to Scientists, spreads faster than the former. The University of Ghana is home to some 40 000 students. Only about one-third of these students are housed. Opening school to this huge population is a high risk.

Secondly, increasing demand for Tertiary education is coming at a slower pace of infrastructural development. Annually, the University admits over 10,000 freshmen and less than one-fifth of this number are able to acquire accommodation on campus. A double-track arrangement allows the university to make more efficient use of existing resources whiles expanding gradually.

Economically, the pandemic has brought financial hardship to parents and self-financing students. Part-time jobs are no longer available for students to work while in school. A six-week arrangement is better at reducing hardship emanating from financial difficulties.

With a few reasons outlined, I am of the firm belief and agreement with Management for such a thoughtful and COVID-19 friendly approach.

This period shall allow students to be exposed to the realities of life outside school whiles allowing young people to gather valuable experiences as students.

Thank you.

ASOKORE MAMPONG SLUM RAZED BY FIRE

0

Fire has razed down a slum, Nima-Mok, located in the Asokore Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti Region, displacing more than 50 persons.

The incident occurred on Monday, 28 December, 2020.

Almost all the wooden structures cited at the slum were razed down by the fire.

It took the intervention of the Fire Service to douse the fire which had already destroyed lots of property.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

Assembly Member for the Adukrom Electoral area, Abdul-Rashid Musah, has however assured the displaced residents that he would solicit for assistance in order to aid their current plight.

Mr Musah said: “We called the Fire Service when the fire was reported. They didn’t come early but eventually they came and quenched the fire. So many things have been destroyed to the ground- no one has been able to take a penny.

“Many are vulnerable people including scrap dealers and head potters. We have been able to call NADMO and they have assured that they will take their report to the Municipal Assembly and Regional Office. I assure the residents that I will solicit help to support them because, without the help, I just don’t see how these people will rise again.”

Some of the victims however, appealed to the authorities to come to their aid.

“I was in town when they called to inform me about the fire outbreak.

“I have lost my market items worth GHS 120,000. We are appealing to the authorities to help us sustain our business,” a victim who was affected by the fire noted.

DEAL WITH ATTACKERS OF JOURNALISTS – OPPONG NKRUMAH

0

The Minister for Information Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has charged the security agencies to deal with threats and attacks against journalists.

This comes on the back of recent incidents of attacks and threats on some media practitioners in the country.

Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni, morning show host on of Angel FM, Captain Smart and Abdul Hayi Moomen of GBC have been the latest victims.

Interacting with journalists from Ofoase Mr Nkrumah said “a number of journalists have reported threats and at least one (1) robbery in the aftermath of the 2020 elections.
“It has been suggested that these threats are associated with their work as journalists,” the Information Minister, who doubles as the Member of Parliament for the area indicated.

He continued: “It is of critical importance that our security agencies get to the bottom of these complaints and use all the legitimate means at their disposal to unmask the identities of the culprits – whatever their motives – and arrest and prosecute them with speed”.
“Ghana’s enviable reputation as a protector of journalists’ rights and freedoms must be preserved,” he added.

GJA CALLS FOR POLICE INVESTIGATION INTO MANASSEH’S ALLEGED DEATH THREAT

0

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has received disturbing reports of death threats issued against freelance investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni, from someone believed to be a political fanatic aggrieved by an opinion piece written by the award-winning journalist on the outcome of the 2020 elections.

We have also received similar reports of death threats against other journalists across the country by politically-connected persons. This is the latest of a series of death threats issued against Manasseh in the past few years. But the venom in the latest death notice served on him via email is poisonous enough to snuff life, and for which reason the GJA wishes to sound the alarm bell for all to respond.

The GJA totally condemns such barbaric contemplation, machination, orchestration, plot and scheme, whether individually inspired or collectively conspired, to kill a journalist for discharging a lawful mandate guaranteed by the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana.

Given the growing dearth of tolerance in our body politic and penchant by some people to resort to brutality especially against journalists; given the reference to the gruesome murder of Ahmed Suale made by the threat or to inform Manasseh about the fate that awaits him anytime he picked his pen to write, and given the fact that the evil-minded person issued the death threat against Manasseh on Christmas Day, a day that marks the celebration of life of Jesus Christ, the Savior, and on which day goodwill abounds from mankind, this barbaric act of intent must be put to death by getting to the bottom of it and dealing with the culprit decisively.

In the regard of the foregoing, we call on the Ghana Police Service to investigate, arrest and prosecute the suspect as swiftly and decisively as possible. We also call on the police to provide adequate security to Manasseh and other journalists across the country who have similarly received death threats. We believe the seriousness the police attaches to these matters will help calm the nerves of journalists in particular,

Ghanaians in general and foreigners resident in the country about their safety and security.

The GJA calls on the President, who is the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, to condemn the death threats against journalists and give a firm assurance about their safety and security. We also call on the National Peace Council, political parties, civil society organisations, religious organisations and all well-meaning Ghanaians to roundly condemn the death threats issued against Manasseh and other journalists in the country.

We also urge our media partners, both national and international, including the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) and Rapporteur San Frontier (Reporters Without Borders) to condemn the death threats against journalists in Ghana.

We wish to bring to the attention of our national and international media partners that, although Ghana is touted as a beacon of democracy in Africa, the death nail is being driven hard into the coffin of free speech and press freedom, which are cardinal functionaries of democracy.

And it is time to halt the Pall Bearers from carrying the casket of free speech and press freedom to the graveyard, while we attempt to resurrect same from death.

MOBILE MONEY HELPED DEALING WITH COVID 19 – MTN

0

The Senior Commercial Manager in charge of South-East Zone of MTN Ghana, Peter Obimpeh has asserted that the high penetration of MTN Mobile money helped the country contain the spread of coronavirus during the height of the pandemic.

Ghana’s situation of the pandemic is well under control compared to other countries. As at December 24, 2020 Ghana had 933 active cases of Covid-19 and a total of 333 deaths recorded.

According to the Senior Commercial Manager of MTN, mobile money facilitated financial transactions in the digital space reducing movement of people from one point to the other which could have increased the risks of exposure.

He said, MTN has learnt a lot of lessons from the pandemic informing injection of new ideas into its digital transaction platform to make it robust .

“If you notice many of the information that were sent around for us to do a lot more digital activities and of course mobile money played a key role in that today even around the COVID era without necessarily going to an agent point you could easily withdraw money unto your wallet and be able to transact activity across so that is how similar the service is and within that difficult moment many people are able to sit comfortably in the comfort of their home and be able to transact activity without necessarily visiting an agent point ”

“But I must also say that in terms of what role the agents also play their presence within the various communities was also very key that you don’t need to also travel longer a distance to be able to access some of these services .so I think it played a role and we’ve also learnt a lot in terms of how we can make it more robust for such eventualities” .

He said this in Koforidua at the 2020 Eastern Regional Momo Award ceremony held to honour over 55 Agents, Merchants and foot soldiers who distinguished themselves during the year under review .

The overall best winners of the three major categories received Motorbikes and other souvenirs while others received Flat Screen Television set each with citation of honour

“it is an award ceremony to recognize our valued agents and merchants who have tirelessly work through out the year , we commenced this in 2014 and so since the inception of this award we’ve so far rewarded over 5000 agents and merchants and so we see this year equally as no exception where we need to ensure that all the hard work that our agents and merchants have put together we adequately reward them so today we’ve come over to do a regional award”.

Mobile Money Implementation Manager, Faisal Ali said mobile money agents are being insured by MTN in addition to enhanced collaboration with security agencies.

He, however, urged mobile money agents to observe basic security protocols to keep safe.
