ELECTORAL COMMISSION REVIEWS LEAVE NOTICE

0

The Electoral Commission has reviewed its leave notice to staff saying senior leadership of the commission will continue to work while juniors proceed on leave.

In a revised statement Wednesday, the commission said:” The Senior leadership and some key operational staff of the commission will continue to work during the break”.

It comes after the massive backlash from civil society groups and opposition parties following its leave announcement Tuesday.

Reacting to the announcement, the CSOs said: “At an emergency meeting of Civil Society Organisations(CSOs) to assess the current post-election political impasse, we noted with concern, a circular signed by the Deputy Chair (Corporate Services) of the EC, Dr Bossman E. Asare, suggesting that the Electoral Commission (EC)may be going on recess from the 23rd December 2020 to 19thJanuary 2021.

“Given the current post-election context and the matters arising, some of which might require their attention, we find it unacceptable that the EC should be shutting down at this critical moment at this critical moment, and without any clarification to the public of the alternative arrangements that have been put in place”.

The statement added: “We have also observed with concern that the minority party in Parliament was barred from submitting a petition to the Electoral Commission today by security personnel, thereby preventing them from making their presentation. In light of the EC’s response that it received the notice late, and that it holds the institution of Parliament in high regard, we kindly urge the Minority to re-submit their petition and the results it has, to the EC, as soon as possible, for prompt action.

“We call on the EC to activate mechanisms for inclusive stakeholder dialogue as part of the electoral management process. We further call on the EC to review its decision on its intended one-month long leave and assure Ghanaians that until these matters are resolved, the leadership of the Commission will be on duty to discharge its responsibilities fully.

VIDEO DECLARATION OF JOHN MAHAMA AS PRESIDENT IS FAKE – EC

0

The Electoral Commission (EC) has reiterated its declaration of Nana Akufo-Addo as the winner of the 2020 presidential elections.

This comes on the back of a video purportedly showing the EC chairperson, Jean Mensa, announcing the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama as the winner of the elections.

The commission in a statement on Tuesday December 22 indicated that the video is “doctored and not a true reflection of what was declared.”

It emphasized that Nana Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party obtained more than the constitutionally required 50% plus one valid votes cast to be declared president and the results of the polls have been duly gazetted.

“The Commission will like to reiterate that Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is the President-Elect of the 2020 Presidential Election having obtained more than fifty percent of the total number of valid votes cast as enshrined in Article 63:3 of the 1992 Constitution. This declaration has subsequently been gazetted by the Ghana Publishing Company Limited (GPCL),” it stated.

WE WON TECHIMAN BY 293 VOTES GAP – MINORITY IN PARLIAMENT

0

The Minority caucus in parliament insists that its parliamentary candidate, Christopher Bayere Baasongti is the legitimate winner of the Techiman South constituency seat in the just-ended parliamentary elections. The party says it won that election by 293 votes.

Although the Electoral Commission (EC) has declared the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah, the winner, the NDC said the Commission’s declaration is flawed and illegal.

According to the NDC minority members, there was no collation of results and so the EC’s announcement of the NPP candidate is victor threatens Ghana’s enviable democracy hence its rejection of the results.

The Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu at a press conference on Tuesday to present pink sheets from each polling station in the constituency as basis for its insistence that it won the seat accused the government of “working to deny the NDC a parliamentary majority.”

According to the party, data available to them indicates that the NDC secured 50,306 votes against the NPP’s 50,013 with 919 rejected ballots.

According to the opposition party, the 293 vote margin makes Christopher Bayere the winner of the parliamentary elections.

“Let anybody from any media house share with me their evidence of a copy of certified collated results for Techiman South Parliamentary Sheet. This is shameful to the EC of Ghana. You conduct elections and two weeks into it, neither the candidate nor his representatives or the NDC as an interested party can boast of an official copy of the outcome of that election,” he said at the press conference.

Haruna Iddrisu further demanded a summary of the poll from the EC.

The NDC MPs have already threatened to boycott the inauguration of President Akufo-Addo for a second term if the EC does not collate of the parliamentary results in Techiman South in its presence.

USE PRESS BRIEFINGS TO ADDRESS COMPUTATIONAL ERRORS – CODEO TO EC

0

The Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to hold a public event to address the computational errors that were detected in its initial declaration of the 2020 Presidential Election results.

According to CODEO, the press releases being issued by the EC to clarify the errors have not helped to clear the air of doubt surrounding the integrity of the Presidential election results declared by the Commission on December 9.

In a press statement signed by its National Coordinator, Albert Arhin, “CODEO is of the view that, given what is at stake, the EC must go beyond passive publication of a press release to hold a public event to address the underlying issues with respect to the computational errors identified, so as to allay any lingering concerns and doubts.

“In addition, the Coalition urges the EC to ensure that source documents signed by the political parties, which support the instrument of declaration, are consistent with the tally sheet for the collation of the national results for the presidential candidates,” the statement said.

CODEO’s statement follows the EC’s press release on December 10 clarifying errors in the presidential election results declared on Wednesday, December 9.

The statement acknowledged that the EC Chairperson, Mrs Jean Mensa “inadvertently used 13,433,573 as the total valid votes cast” instead of 13,119,460.

“This does not change the percentages stated for each candidate and the declaration made by the Chairperson,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, CODEO was quick to point out that the EC’s errors had no effect on its Parallel Vote Tabulation (PVT) estimates.

According to the statement, despite the changes done by the EC after detecting errors in the original declaration, the final results still fell within the confidence range of CODEO’s estimates.

“CODEO has absolute confidence in its PVT estimates, reaffirms the results that it has already published, and assures the public that the results declared by the EC closely match the Coalition’s PVT estimates,” it assured Ghanaians.

I’LL ACCEPT RESULTS AFTER AN INDEPENDENT AUDIT – JOHN MAHAMA

0

The Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has stated that he will accept the results of the recent elections only after an independent forensic investigation has been undertaken to confirm the veracity of the results.

Speaking in an interview with Voice of America (VOA), Mr. Mahama described the just-ended elections as the “most incompetent elections we (Ghanaians) have ever had.

“Everything about this election does not reach the standard that Ghana’s Electoral Commission has attained for itself. Ghana’s Electoral Commission is held in high esteem as one of the best Electoral Commissions.

“Unfortunately, in this election, she (Jean Mensa) can’t even get the results right; the declaration is all over the place,” he bemoaned.

The former President has rejected the results of the December 7 presidential elections, describing it as flawed and fictitious. According to the NDC, the EC were in cahoots with the incumbent to rig the elections and rob the NDC of their victory.

“I think that [with] the incompetence the EC has shown, it will be useful for us to do a forensic audit of the EC’s own systems and the numbers to come to what the final number for the EC is, because as at now I don’t know what number they are going to gazette”.

Mr Mahama believes that he bears the responsibility as a democrat and as the choice of the over 6 million Ghanaians who voted for him to uphold (Ghana’s) democracy and hold the EC to higher standards.

“The way they’ve conducted this election is a dent to our democratic credentials as a government. And so in my principles as a democrat, I cannot be seen sweeping it under the carpet and letting it go. I think that we must bring closure to this by seeing exactly where the issues are.

“If an independent audit is done by the EC which shows I’ve lost, I’d be the first to concede and walk away. But as long as that is not done, and I know that there was a deliberate attempt to subvert the will of the people in favour of the incumbent, it will be wrong for me, in terms of our democratic principles, to just leave it,” he emphasised.

The EC on Wednesday, December 9, declared the incumbent President, Nana Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), winner of the 2020 election polls, with 6,730,413 votes, representing 51.59% of the total valid ballots cast.

John Mahama was announced to have polled 6,214,889 votes, securing him 47.36% of the total valid ballots cast.

This notwithstanding, the National Democratic Congress has been insistent that it has in possession pink sheets to back its claims to have won the 2020 election polls.

Meanwhile, Mr. Mahama is expected to be in the Bono East Region capital Techiman on Wednesday, according to a statement released by the NDC in the Bono East Region.

FIRE BREAKS OUT IN PARTS OF KANTAMANTO MARKET

0

Fire has razed down parts of the popular Kantamanto Market in the Central Business District of Accra, leading to loss of properties worth millions of Ghana Cedis.

The cause of the fire, which is said to have started in the late hours of Tuesday is yet to be established.

According to eyewitnesses, the Fire Service has been trying to douse the fire since 11pm Tuesday.

A few of the traders managed to salvage some of their wares in the cause of the melee before their stalls were burnt to ashes. “I’m a widow, I don’t have anything. Now I don’t know how to survive. All my belongings are gone,” one of the traumatised traders told Asaase News’ Karen Dodoo at the scene.

On 28 November a similar fire incident occurred near the market destroying parts of the GCB Bank’s Liberty House branch.

I REGRET BLEACHING MY SKIN – OBUOBA ADOFO

0

He may have enjoyed all the accolades and attention at the height of his career, but if there is anything that veteran Highlife artiste Obuoba J. A. Adofo has regrets about and cannot forgive himself for, it is bleaching his skin.

According to the man who blessed Ghanaians with great tunes such as Owuo Mpaso, Yaa Boatemaa, Ankwandobi, Kyerema, Odo Pa, Yebede Agoro, City Boys and Mukyea, he was pushed into the act through societal pressure.

“You know at that time, bleaching and having permed, curly hair meant a lot to people who thought they had arrived. As a musician at my peak, I wanted to feel that sense of belonging so I bleached my skin.”

“I thought that that way, people would know that I was a big man, but later I regretted my actions having learnt of the complications of bleaching and the consequences people suffered.

“I even found out that it was difficult for surgeries to be performed on bleached skin. Till date, I feel guilty for doing that and really wish I could change the hands of time,” he told Graphic Showbiz after a group known as Lovers of Highlife Music made a donation to him.

“In my era, before your song was played on the radio or anywhere, it wasn’t supposed to be profane, but it appears now everything and just anything is played on air. Also, I think the media is doing well in the promotion of Highlife but can do better, and I want to challenge them to do more,” he stated.

Obuoba Adofo also had some advice for the young acts, urging them to be united.

“If you are a Gospel, Reggae, Highlife or Hiplife artiste, we are all one and must understand that we have the same goal of blessing people with our talent.

“So we must work closely and support one another and not feel a genre is superior to another. This is my humble request,” he stated.
