“THERE IS NO POLITICALLY MOTIVATED ENTHOCENTRISM AGAINST VOLTARIANS” – AKUFO ADDO

0

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo says the Volta Region was not singled out for any special military operation in the run-up to the conduct of the voter registration exercise.

According to President Akufo-Addo, the deployment of the military personnel along the country’s borders was a nationwide exercise, and was done across all our borders and not in the Volta Region alone.

Speaking at Keta, on Thursday, 27th August 2020, at a durbar held in his honour by the Awoamefia of the Anlo State, Togbui Sri III, he stated that there are currently 1,000 military personnel deployed along the country’s borders, of which 163 are deployed along the Volta Region border.

“This has been labelled a ‘military invasion of the Volta Region’. Togbewo, Mamawo, Volta Region is an integral part of the Republic of Ghana, and military deployments in a Region cannot be described as an invasion. Some elements of social media went into a frenzy, mostly with old videos taken in Accra and other parts of the world being passed off as residents of the Volta Region being brutalized by soldiers”, President Akufo-Addo said.

“This has been escalated into accusations of ethnic cleansing, and the Government that I lead has been labelled as a tribalist. Whilst social media is a useful tool for information sharing, it can also be, and has been, used to magnify small incidents, place pictures, videos and voices out of context, or simply generate outright fabrications, in order to stir up needless ethnic animosity amongst citizens who are, otherwise, living peacefully with one another,” the President added.

He said the easiest way to tell if people are being discriminated against by a government would be to look out for how the national cake is shared, adding that, on that score, his Government has spread development projects equitably in all parts of the country.

“I dare say this area (Anloga) has done quite well under this Government. After years of demanding, an Anloga District has been created, and a new Assembly Complex is being constructed. There are numerous GETFund projects scattered all over Anloga, and Keta SHS’s is one which I am due to commission today. Important to me are two TVET projects in the Anloga district alone, one of which I shall be inspecting at Atorkor,” he stressed.

Additionally, the President indicated that there is the Keta landing beach project, construction of which commences in September, the €85 million facilities for the Keta Water Supply rehabilitation and expansion project, and the Keta Harbour Project.

“We have not completed our development journey, but, surely, we are on the right path, and no one can accuse this government of discrimination in the distribution of the national cake,” President Akufo-Addo noted.

“It was here in this region that people were most passionate about political tradition. It was from here that the first people had to flee into political exile after independence, and it was in this Region that many chiefs had to flee into political exile, and some died there. Some of the consequences on the chieftaincy scene in the region have still not been properly resolved. It was from this region that people were sent into internal exile,” he said.

GOV’T JUSTIFIES REGISTRATION OF AGYAPA DEAL IN JERSEY

0

The government has explained the reason behind basing Agyapa Royalties Limited in Jersey of the Channel Islands which is a known tax haven.

The government says it adopted such a decision to ensure that it was not paying more tax on mining royalties than it needed to.

The government registered the company in Jersey “because it was the most tax-efficient avenue to use,” Charles Adu Boahen, a Deputy Finance Minister, said at a press conference on Thursday evening.

“We need to domicile an entity in a jurisdiction that will provide the ability for the royalties not to be taxed again… If we had decided to transfer the royalties in Agyapa that was domiciled in Ghana, we would have ended up in a situation where we would be paying tax twice,” he explained.

The government through the Minerals Income Investment Fund set up Agyapa Royalties Limited to monetize Ghana’s gold royalties.

In exchange, the company plans to raise between $500 million and $750 million for the Government on the Ghana and London Stock exchanges to invest in developmental projects.

This arrangement has however faced criticism from opposition political parties, Civil Society Organisations, and other observers who have called for the arrangement to be suspended.

Jersey is a known destination for incorporating companies that want to be listed on the London Stock Exchange, as the government did with Agyapa Royalties.

It is also one of the top tax havens, attracting business people and other super-wealthy individuals who keep money in offshore accounts for tax avoidance purposes.

Mr. Adu Boahen, however, downplayed concerns that the government may be engaging in an untoward venture with the deal.

“Like all things in life, you can use it for a good purpose or you can decide to use it for a bad purpose. It all depends on your thinking,” the Deputy Minister remarked at the press conference.

“We worked very closely with Jersey and the Prime Minister’s office in London with regard to getting the clearance to make sure that we could use Jersey as the place for incorporation,” he noted further.

Lionel Messi has been a prolific goal scorer all his life with the latest findings showing he has staggering figures during his days in the Argentine team, Newell’s Old Boys.

His style of play has not changed. He still dribbles past opponents with ease and for fun and puts the icing on the cake by scoring goals.

The Argentine magician was picked up by Newell’s Old Boys in 1994 at the age of six and remained in the club until 2000 where he moved to Barcelona and joined the famous La Masia – his first contract with the club actually being written out on a napkin.

Years down the line, Miguel Martinez, a former press officer for the Rosario Football Association has uncovered the outrageous statistics of Lionel Messi.

Accessing a lot of documents, Martinez discovered that the Barcelona skipper scored an overwhelming 234 goals in 176 games from 1994 to 1999.

Lionel Messi over the years has remained a phenomenon and is arguably the best footballer the world has ever seen – creating magic for club and country.

He has won over 30 major trophies for Barcelona an Argentina.

The 33-year-old has staggering figures in terms of scoring goals, poaching over 634 goals for Barcelona and 70 more for Argentina in 138 games.

Messi is as glorious in these times as he was growing up as a footballer in Newell’s Old Boys and now there are figures to show for it.

The data compiled by Miguel Martinez shows a breakdown of the goals scored by Leo Messi per season before his big move to La Masia.

1994: At the age of six he stood out with 40 goals in 29 games in his first year at Newell’s.

1995: Played 30 games and scored 35, again with more than one average goal per game.

1996: 36 goals again, although with fewer games, since he only played 27.

1997: That year he played 36 games and scored 40 goals. The only team that they faced twice and did not score a goal was Central A.

1998: He played 25 games and scored 27 goals, his lowest mark in a season. On several dates, he did not appear on the payroll, although the reasons for his absence are unknown.

1999: His last year at Newell’s and by far his best. He nailed the incredible mark of 55 goals in 29 games. This campaign Leprosy finished undefeated, with 26 wins and 3 draws.

AHWOI FORCED MILLS TO CONTEST 2008 ELECTIONS – RAWLINGS

0

Former President Jerry John Rawlings has hit hard at National Democratic Congress (NDC) stalwart, Professor Kwamena Ahwoi over the latter’s supposed ploy to misrepresent the relationship that existed between the NDC founder and John Evans Atta Mills in the run-up to the 2008 general elections.

It will be recalled that Mr. Ahwoi in his controversial book “Working with Rawlings,” accused the former President of attempting to sabotage Prof. Mills’ presidential ambitions by trying to replace him with Ato Ahwoi.

“Jerry Rawlings invited Ato Ahwoi to his Ridge residence and prevailed on him to contest the presidential primaries against Prof. Mills. Ato says he was astounded because Jerry knew his relationship with Prof. Mills and also knew the role that he had played in 1996 in convincing Prof. Mills to agree to become his running mate”, portions of the book read.

But in a statement, Rawlings explained that Prof. Mills had called him to South Africa, where he had gone to receive medical treatment, to indicate his desire to forego the presidential race owing to his medical state.

Rawlings described as bizarre, Kwamena Ahwoi’s lengthy diatribe about how he [Rawlings] coerced Prof. Ahwo’s brother [Ato Ahwoi] to contest Mills ahead of the NDC’s primaries – leading to the breakdown of their healthy relationship.

According to Rawlings, Mr. Ahwoi instead forced Prof. Mills to contest the polls despite his ill health against his will.

“When Professor Mills returned to Ghana, meetings were held with him without the knowledge or participation of President Rawlings, where Professor Mills was convinced by those present, not to withdraw his candidature and actually made to believe that President Rawlings was working to undermine him,” Rawlings said in his response.

“That, was when the mistrust began, and Mr. Kwamena Ahwoi was and is well-known to be one of the master-architects of that manipulative agenda that pushed a very unwell candidate Mills into the 2008 General Election,” he added.

Following the conversation, Rawlings said he informed and urged party members to “identify recognizable party members who could step in,” insisting that some known personalities in the party should position themselves for the role.

Rawlings, therefore, rejected claims that Ato Ahwoi was forced to contest Mills in the NDC’s primaries ahead of the 2008 general elections.

In the statement, the office of the former President said there was no “attempt to undermine, sabotage, betray or malign Professor Mills as the author shamelessly infers in his book. It should be stated on record, that President Rawlings took the responsible and pragmatic approach after he received that politically unnerving call from Professor Mills. He consulted the Party leadership to take strategic steps to fill the gap which by Professor Mills’ account was imminent”.

“It is rather telling of him (Kwamena Ahwoi) to deny this well-known crisis merely in his bid to deride and denigrate the genuine efforts of former President Rawlings to arrest a crisis,” Rawlings clarified.

DOME-FAASE RESIDENTS FLEE TOWN

0

Hundreds of residents of Dome-Faase in the Ga South Municipality have deserted their homes after armed soldiers stormed the community.

The personnel numbering over 300 besieged the town in search of some civilians who assaulted two soldiers during a land conflict.

The two soldiers were severely injured when they were attacked by the irate residents over land ownership.

One of the soldiers who identified himself as Clement Asare-Addo told JoyNews that warning shots had been fired with the hope of dispersing the agitated residents. However, this backfired.

The residents accused them of not having been officially assigned to that post.

He added that even after explaining to the leader of the group that they were not criminals, the group proceeded to beat them up.

A visit to the community yesterday revealed that only a few women and children have been left behind.

NPP DID NOT USE MISUSE MONEY ON POLITICAL ACTIVITIES – KRL denies claims

0

KRL International LLC has denied claims that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had used funds from the public purse to support the party’s political activities.

Their statement follows a recent article anonymously published on the Open Source Investigations (OSI) website which alleged that President Akufo-Addo had paid KRL International for their service in his campaign using public funds.

Indeed, KRL admitted to having started working with the President since his 2008 campaign in a transparent and proper manner.

However contrary to what the article on OSI suggested, the President had not paid them for their service in his campaign using public funds.

According to the firm, their continuing to work with President Akufo-Addo was under a different contract with the Finance Ministry engaging international stakeholders and media houses on behalf of the Ministry for the past three years, supporting the promotion of initiatives such as One District One Factory (1D1F), Planting for Food and Jobs, Ghana Beyond Aid, and resource mobilization for Covid-19.

They said, “KRL had separate contracts to work with the campaign and with the government, which were financed separately, as appropriate, and made available under US laws to the US Department of Justice. Indeed, KRL’s relationship with Nana Akufo-Addo dates back to his 2008 campaign. It has been transparent and proper.”

They explained further saying, “Prior to President Akufo-Addo’s inauguration on January 7, 2017 KRL had a contract with the ‘I Am for Nana Foundation’ in support of his campaign, followed by an agreement with the Office of the President-Elect to offer support during the transition period.

“Several months after President AkufoAddo took office and established a cabinet, KRL signed its first agreement with the government of Ghana to provide support to the Ministry of Finance.

“Pursuant to the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), KRL has always submitted timely and transparent reporting to the U.S. Justice Department on all work with foreign governments and political parties.”

In this vein, KRL says the claims being leveled against President Akufo-Addo, the government of Ghana, and their firm should be disregarded and treated with contempt.

They also questioned the credibility and authenticity of the website which publishes content under anonymity.

KRL has threatened to file a formal legal complaint against the site once they establish who the owners and editors are.

They said, “OSI, which presents itself as an international investigative body, is but a partisan blog, established in 2015 to publish largely defamatory content about then-candidate Nana Akufo-Addo. It was reactivated in 2020 for the same mission.
