With Sunday’s results, United and Chelsea will join title-winners Liverpool and second-place Man. City in the Champions League next season, with the Red Devils sealing their return to the competition after finishing sixth last season.

Meanwhile, Leicester City and Tottenham are headed to the Europa League after their results on Sunday, with Wolves left waiting for the result of the FA Cup final, which will determine their European fate.

United confirmed a top-four finish thanks to a 2-0 win over Leicester, scoring twice in the second-half following a tense first 45 minutes.

The game’s pivotal moment came in the 70th minute when Bruno Fernandes fired past Kasper Schmeichel from the spot after Jonny Evans fouled Anthony Martial inside the box. Jesse Lingard then sealed the victory in the eighth minute of stoppage time.

Fernandes’ goal doomed Leicester to a fifth-place finish, with the Foxes needing all three points against the Red Devils.

Leicester’s recent results saw the Foxes fall all the way from second to fifth, after the club remained in the top four from September 21 to July 22 before failing to return on the final day of the Premier League season.

Chelsea, meanwhile booked their Champions League spot with a 2-0 win over Wolves, with the Blues going into Sunday knowing that even a point would be enough to seal their spot in Europe’s top competition.

Spurs originally took the lead in the 13th minute thanks to a finish for Harry Kane, but Palace was able to fire back in the 53rd minute through Jeffrey Schlupp.

As a result, Spurs moved into sixth to book an automatic spot in the Europa League, while Wolves will need Chelsea to beat Arsenal in the FA Cup final this weekend for their seventh-place finish to be enough.

SOMALIA PM VOTED OUT

An almost unanimous vote of no-confidence on Saturday that saw Somalia’s prime minister removed from his post has been condemned inside and outside the country.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said the move against Hassan Ali Khaire showed “serious disrespect for the constitutional foundations” of Somalia, while the internal security minister called it a “dark day”.”The ongoing incident has high impact consistent with an intentional blackout and is not attributed to any international issue,” the group said as internet connectivity has been cut across much of the country according to freedom Monitors NetBlocks

The vote to remove Mr. Khaire, which was backed by 170 out of 178 MPs, follows a power struggle between him and President Mohamed Abdullahi “Farmajo” Mohamed over the timing of the next presidential election.

The removed prime minister has said the vote must be held in February 2021 as scheduled, but the president has insisted that it should only go ahead if it’s held on a one-person, one-vote basis.

Currently in Somalia clans select MPs who in turn select the president, so correspondents say such a change would be impossible within the given timeframe because it would require vast resources and mass voter registration.

Until a new prime minister is appointed, Deputy Prime Minister Mahdi Mohamed Guled has been asked by the president to act as caretaker.

THE AFFIRMATIVE ACTION SERIES: A CASE FOR FAIR REPRESENTATION IN GHANA

0

Affirmative action originally refers to a set of policies and practices preventing discrimination based on race, creed, color, and national origins, now often refer To policies positively supporting members of disadvantaged or underrepresented groups that have previously suffered discrimination in areas such as education, employment, and housing.

Historically, the affirmative action has achieved goals such as bridging inequalities in employment and pay, increasing access to education, promoting diversity, and redressing apparent past wrongs, harms, or hindrances.

The nature of affirmative action policies varies across the world from region to region and exists on a spectrum from a hard quota to merely targeting encouragement for increased participation.

Some countries use a quota system, whereby a certain percentage of government jobs, political positions, and school vacancies must be reserved for members of a certain group; an example of this is the reservation system in India.

In some other regions where quotas are not used, minority group members are given preference or special consideration in selection processes. In the United States, affirmative action in employment and education has been the subject of legal and political controversy. In 2003, the Supreme Court of the United States, in Grutter v. Bollinger, held that the University of Michigan Law School could consider race as a plus-factor when evaluating applicants holistically and maintained the prohibition on the use of quotas.

Ghana has signed on to various protocols and conventions to ensure women’s equal participation in decision-making spaces. Ghana is a signatory to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) which provides that, Parties must take all appropriate measures to eliminate discrimination against women in the political and public life of the country.

The Beijing Declaration also calls on member states to ensure equal participation of women and men in decision-making. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) also state that gender equality is not only a fundamental human right but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable world.

Currently, out of about a population of 52% women, only 38 out of 275 members of parliament are women. 7 percent % of MMDCEs in Ghana are women and 30% of Ministerial appointees are women.

The 1992 Constitution of Ghana, in Article 35(6) states that “the State shall take appropriate measures to achieve reasonable gender balance in the recruitment and appointment to public offices.” Article 17 adds that no citizen shall be discriminated against on the basis of gender, race, or religion. These provisions, therefore, mandate Ghana to ensure women’s active participation in governance and decision making spaces.

The affirmative action bill when passed to law will enable both men, women, and the less privileged have access to equal rights for a better and peaceful society for us all…

Let’s all support this good idea by educating and encouraging both the young and old on the need for the affirmative action bill to be passed in Ghana.
