NORTH KOREA DEFIES UN RESOLUTIONS WITH UNDERWATER NUCLEAR WEAPONS TEST

0

North Korea claimed that it had tested an underwater nuclear weapons system called Haeil-5-23 on Friday, January 19, 2024. The test was a response to the joint naval exercises by the US, South Korea and Japan, which involved a US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. The Haeil-5-23 is said to be an underwater self-explosive drone that can carry a nuclear warhead. North Korea has previously tested similar weapons and other missiles that can reach the US mainland.

North Korea’s defense ministry said the test was to deter the hostile military actions by the US and its allies, and warned that it was ready for war at any time. The US, South Korea and Japan condemned the test as a provocation and a violation of UN resolutions. Some experts say that North Korea’s underwater nuclear weapons system is not as advanced or reliable as its submarine-launched ballistic missiles, which pose a greater threat to regional and global security.

However, they also warn that North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs are progressing rapidly and pose a serious challenge to the international community.

US AND IRAN NAVIGATE MISSILE TENSIONS

The United States has condemned Iran’s recent missile strikes near Iraq’s northern city of Irbil. These strikes were described as a reckless and imprecise set of strikes by Adrienne Watson, spokesperson for the White House National Security Council. The US emphasized its support for the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of Iraq. Fortunately, no US personnel or facilities were targeted in these attacks.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed that they destroyed an Israeli spy headquarters in northern Iraq using ballistic missiles. However, this incident is believed to have nothing to do with Israel and everything to do with the ongoing US-Iran tension. The situation in the region has been escalating, involving Iran’s allies from Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen.

In response to the attack, Iraqi Kurdish Prime Minister Masrour Barzani condemned it as a “crime against the Kurdish people.” The strikes resulted in the loss of civilian lives, including that of a prominent businessman, Peshraw Dizayee. Additionally, the Revolutionary Guards stated that they also targeted Islamic State (IS) group positions in Syria as part of their retaliation

UK’S BOLD BET

The UK government has approved a £2 billion (around $2.5 billion) project to create a “carbon negative” wood-burning power plant in Yorkshire, northern England, run by Drax. The project involves adding carbon capture units to two generators that burn biomass, mostly wood pellets imported from North America.

Drax claims that this technology, called BECCS (bioenergy with carbon capture and storage), will allow it to remove more carbon pollution from the atmosphere than it produces by burning the biomass.
However, the project has been heavily criticised by some climate experts and scientists, who argue that BECCS is an unproven and costly technology that may not be effective in mitigating climate change and may even worsen it.

Burning biomass releases carbon pollution that takes decades to be reabsorbed by new trees and plants, which may not be enough to offset the emissions. Sourcing wood from mature forests may damage the ecosystems and biodiversity of those forests, and reduce their ability to store carbon.

The carbon capture and storage process is not 100% efficient and may leak carbon back into the atmosphere.
Drax is also under investigation by the UK energy regulator Ofgem for allegedly breaching sustainability requirements in relation to the wood pellets it burns.

The people of Gaza are facing a humanitarian crisis of unprecedented proportions according to the UN. The ongoing war between Israel and Hamas has killed over 22,000 people, mostly civilians, and displaced nearly 2 million more.

The Israeli blockade and the destruction of infrastructure have cut off the supply of food, water, fuel, and medicine to the besieged enclave. As a result, a quarter of households are facing catastrophic conditions, with extreme lack of food and starvation.

Children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and older people are especially vulnerable to the effects of hunger and malnutrition, which can have irreversible consequences for their health and development.

The UN and other humanitarian agencies have called for an immediate ceasefire and the urgent delivery of aid to Gaza, but the situation remains critical. Gaza is at risk of famine if the war does not stop. This is a tragedy that must end now.
