The Biden administration is expected to re-designate the Houthis as a terrorist group after their removal from the Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTO) list in 2021.This decision comes in response to repeated recent attacks by the Houthis in the Red Sea.

President Biden conveyed a private message to Iran regarding the Houthis.
This communication followed a new U.S. strike on the Houthis in Yemen, prompted by their attacks on Red Sea shipping. While Iran denies involvement, the U.S. asserts that Iran provides critical intelligence to the Houthis.

HIGH COURT UPHOLDS TRANSGENDER STUDENTS’ RIGHT TO BATHROOM EQUALITY

0

The U.S. Supreme Court recently declined to consider whether a middle school in Indiana was required to allow a transgender boy to use the bathroom that corresponds with his gender identity

The case originated in 2022 when the mother of a 7th-grade transgender student challenged the school’s policy. The Metropolitan School District of Martinsville, Indiana, had implemented a policy barring transgender students from using bathrooms based on their biological sex.
In 2023, the Chicago-based 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against the school district.

The appeals court upheld a federal judge’s injunction that allowed several transgender students, including the boy identified as A.C., to use their preferred bathrooms. A.C. who had identified as a boy since the age of 8, was able to use the bathroom corresponding to his gender identity.

The central issue was whether the Constitution’s 14th Amendment (which ensures equal protection under the law) or Title IX (the federal law prohibiting sex discrimination in education) protects transgender students in this context. The court’s decision not to intervene means that litigation in lower courts nationwide will continue, with varying conclusions by judges.

The Biden administration has issued guidance stating that Title IX protects against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
However, this approach has been contested in cases related to bathroom access and school sports.

MEDIA MELEE: POLAND’S LEADERS CLASH OVER AIRWAVES

0

In Poland, there’s an intense battle over control of the airwaves, involving the country’s public broadcaster, TVP. The struggle began after the 2023 elections, which ended eight years of populist rule.

Under the previous right wing government, public TV and radio channels had become fiercely partisan.
The new coalition government, led by Donald Tusk, promised to restore balance to the media and stop funding what they called a “factory of lies and hatred”.

Senior opposition figures staged a sit in at TVP offices, denouncing an illegal takeover. They overwhelmed security, burst into the lobby, and occupied the building.A rival management team also entered the main news building in Warsaw. The police presence remains heavy, with constant ID checks in Warsaw. Journalists have moved into TVP’s main studios, researching and editing wherever they find space.

The 24 hour channel, TVP Info, is back on air but broadcasting from a cramped space. The flagship evening news show, now rebranded as 19:30, aims to present a more open and balanced perspective.
This battle for airwaves is part of a much broader power struggle in Poland.
As the country shifts away from the right, public TV and radio are caught up in the political crossfire

Republican Chuck Grassley, the oldest member of the US Senate, has been admitted to a hospital in his home state of Iowa. He is currently being treated for an infection and is receiving antibiotic infusions. At 90 years old, Senator Grassley’s health is being closely monitored, and he is in good spirits. His office has stated that he will return to work as soon as possible following doctors’ orders.

Senator Grassley has an impressive record of 27 years of perfect attendance in the Senate, having missed only one vote in 2020 after testing positive for COVID-19. Prior to that, the last vote he missed was in 1993 due to intense floods in Iowa. Despite his absence, the Senate is currently dealing with critical matters, including a vote on a short-term spending bill to avoid a government shutdown.

The bill aims to keep the government funded until March. Without an agreement, some government agencies could run out of funding by Friday. Senator Grassley’s dedication to his role and his longevity in the Senate make his health situation a matter of concern.

PALESTINIAN ENVOY ACCUSES UK OF DOUBLE STANDARDS AND HYPOCRISY

0

Husam Zomlot, the Palestinian envoy to the UK, has accused the British government of “double standards and hypocrisy” in its policies towards Israel and the Palestinians. He criticized UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak for opposing an application at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) that accused Israel of genocide during the war in Gaza.

Zomlot highlighted the inconsistency in the UK’s stance, where they have suffered “reputational damage” in the Middle East but recently welcomed a decision to ban violent Israeli settlers from entering the UK.

However, he also condemned a government bill that prohibits public bodies from boycotting economic activity with Israel or Israeli settlements. Zomlot emphasized the need for clarity in the UK’s policy regarding Palestine and expressed concern about the UK’s opposition to South Africa’s genocide allegation against Israel at the ICJ.
