NORTH KOREA MISSILE LAUNCH

0

North Korea has commenced the year 2024 with a significant show of military strength, conducting its first ballistic missile test. The test was carried out on a Sunday afternoon, marking a notable escalation in the country’s nuclear-strike capabilities.
The missile launched was an intermediate-range ballistic missile, designed to hit US bases in Asia.

This test is part of North Korea’s ongoing efforts to develop more powerful, harder-to-detect weapons designed to strike remote U.S. targets in the region. The missile was launched from North Korea’s inland area, flying on a northeast trajectory. It reached a maximum altitude of over 30 miles and had a flight distance of at least 310 miles.
The missile tested was a solid-fuel intermediate-range missile. Solid-fuel missiles are a significant advancement in missile technology. They are quicker to launch and harder to detect than their liquid-fuel counterparts.

The missile was also tipped with a hypersonic warhead, another advanced technology that North Korea has been developing.
The missile test comes amid a pledge by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to boost the country’s nuclear-strike capabilities. This test serves as a demonstration to top cadres and the North Korean people that the country’s nuclear arsenal is making significant strides in being able to attack the US.

The test has been met with international condemnation. Japan and South Korea have strongly condemned the missile launch as a clear provocation that seriously threatens peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula. The two countries are working in close cooperation with the U.S. to analyze the launch.

The missile test marks a significant step in North Korea’s military capabilities. It serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing tensions in the region and the challenges that lie ahead in maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula. The international community will be watching closely to see how the situation develops.

US ECONOMY POISED FOR CASH BOOST

0

The US economy is set for an unexpected fiscal boost if lawmakers back a potential deal for $70 billion worth of tax breaks for businesses and families Congressional negotiators are locked in talks over renewing expired business tax breaks and boosting the child tax credit.

The proposal will need to pass through a Congress that is deeply divided over the nation’s fiscal trajectory. If passed, the tax breaks offer a double-edged sword for an economy that appears on course for a soft landing. While the extra cash would boost consumer spending, it would also risk reigniting inflation pressures.

Data for December show that inflation picked up at the end of 2023, fueled by services costs while a decline in goods prices petered out. The consumer price index increased 3.4% in the year through December, the most in three months.

The proposed deal would revive tax breaks for research and development spending, boost the deductibility of investment, such as in equipment, and business loans. Lawmakers are discussing restricting benefits for foreign research investments in order to target the benefits to companies conducting such activities in the US.

The latest elected president of Taiwan is Lai Ching-te, also known as William Lai. He is a Harvard educated physician turned politician and was the vice president before his election. Lai, from the pro-sovereignty Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), won the presidential election with more than 40% of the vote. His party, however, failed to hold onto its parliamentary majority.

President elect Lai has pledged to build consensus, which may moderate some of his policy agenda. He has also stated that he is committed to protecting Taiwan from alleged threats and intimidation from mainland China. China’s reaction has been quite vocal as they framed the election as peace and war, prosperity and decline.

Beijing has repeatedly labeled Lai as a “stubborn worker for Taiwan independence” and a dangerous separatist. After the election, China dismissed the outcome, stating that Taiwan’s ruling DPP does not represent mainstream public opinion. China’s foreign ministry and its embassies around the world have condemned foreign governments that congratulated Taiwan’s DPP and its president-elect Lai Ching-te.

NCCE RAISES ALARM OVER VOTE BUYING IN GHANA

0

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in Ghana has expressed concern over the deepening culture of monetisation of politics as the country prepares for the 2024 General Election. The NCCE has observed that the issue of vote-buying during elections has become not only a supply problem but voters also demanded money from politicians before they exercised their civic responsibility.

The Chairperson of NCCE, Ms Kathleen Addy, described the vote-buying phenomenon as an existential threat to Ghana’s democracy. She stated, “We are at a point where a major criterion for getting elected into public office is the candidates’ ability to dole out cash to voters. It is time to own up to this terrible practice and commit to ending it. If we don’t end it, it will end us.

She further added, “If we only elect those who can distribute hard cash and gifts, we run the risk of exposing ourselves to the dark and dirty money readily available in the world and we will sell our country to forces we cannot even begin to imagine.”

The NCCE is poised to effectively deliver on its mandate and educate citizens extensively to make informed choices in the December 7 polls. The Commission has set to operate and engage the citizenry on the theme: “Together we can build Ghana, so get involved.

Ms Addy urged voters to reject politicians that would stoke violence and appealed to politicians to put the country first in their engagements with the electorate. She also appealed to the media to refrain from using their platforms to spread misinformation, hate speech, personal attacks, and divisive utterances.
